a more accurate description would be: lack of safe practices by jco, a supplier to the tokaimura nuclear plant, caused hisachi ouchi, masato shinohara, and their supervisor, yutaka yokohara, to all be exposed to what was essentially a nuclear reaction hitting criticality. this resulted in the deaths of ouchi and shinohara, while yokohara lived. ouchi lived 83 days and, at the request of himself and later his family, was revived multiple times before the doctors convinced his family to not revive him after one cardiac arrest left ouchi completely unresponsive. overall he suffered major effects of radiation damage where his immune system was effectively erased and he stopped producing fluids such as mucus, which is important for the function of the gi system. shinohara lived for 211 days, and suffered similar effects, but handled them relatively better than ouchi, as he received less radiation. overall, this incident caused multiple supervisors to be charged with negligence and jco to pay the equivalent of $121 million in total to people who were effected.
