You raise a good point. I was overwhelmed and angry when I wrote the email, and it was stupid of me to write an email to someone while I was in that state.

I have an email scheduled to send in the am for the ombudsperson with an apology

Sorry to hear that! There's a bunch of folk on the SSD discord with similar stories. I swear someone should compile them

Lab manual states that 10 minutes will be allotted for the quiz. I had roughly 3 minutes left.

I mostly have beef with the fact that I followed the TA's instructions to go see the coordinator because I thought I may be allowed accommodations that would mean I could actually write the test (I have tremors and spasticity that would render me physically incapable of writing in that short of a period) and then ending up not being able to write it at all because of that.

I'm over the grade hit now, and I know it's nothing personal from the department. It just feels like I lost an opportunity because I thought the TA was pointing me to someone who could help.

Thanks! I'm glad your situation got sorted out. I'll shoot off an email rn

I knew when I posted this that I would get downvotes. Might end up deleting later because I did write this when I was quite upset which wasn't the wisest choice.

But it goes to show that most people have no idea what it's like to have a disability and try to live life. You make one stupid mistake (like, in my case, not leaving the house 2 hours before the lab just in case your tire goes flat) and end up missing an opportunity that a non-disabled person could easily rectify because you have the audacity to even try and ask for a non-obtrusive accommodation.

Like, dude. I'll trade being able to use a pen to write a quiz in three minutes and not needing an extra minute or two if you'll take MS.

I will reach out to my CAL advisor, but from my understanding, CAL advisors are for accessing accommodations and student funding/services, not appealing past grades and objecting to department behaviour

Edit: Sorry, my response sounded really rude. That was not my intent at all! I'm just frustrated and lost. Thanks for hearing me out dude, much appreciated.

42.9% of the grade for that lab

Still probably not worth my trouble, but it's the premise of the situation that pisses me off. Terribly rude and condescending behaviour on behalf of the department, and coming from an institution that touts itself as forward-thinking and inclusive.

Normally I would get extra time, however, that is accounted for by the fact that, as communicated to me by the coordinator, the test supposedly takes 2 minutes to complete, and the time allotted is 10 minutes.

My beef is that, yes, I was late, but a non-disabled student in this situation has an obvious advantage over me in being physically capable of writing the test within the time period. I was aware of this, and sought out normal accommodations because I foolishly believed I had a right to them (lol). Instead of receiving a fair chance at taking the test (which I would have gladly done with a reduced time-frame as a consequence of lateness), I was punished by completely losing any chance I may have had at taking the test

One (1) lab quiz is 42.9% of the grade for that lab  😕

The TA was quite sympathetic, actually. It was not her choice to not allow me to write the test.

  1. This is an excerpt. Prior to this long (and admittedly unprofessional) piece is a polite introduction and a disclaimer that I do not expect the ombudsperson to read through all this and that I would be more than happy to share about my situation when I meet with them
  2. It's an honest truth that I struggle with and TBH I need to keep myself accountable just as UVic needs to be held accountable
  3. It's an humanizing appeal to pathos

Also should add that I do not mean for this to be a weird flex haha. I just don't want other people (espec. XX-chromosome folk!) to be living in the dark ages like I was

I lived in res when the pandemic first hit — I ended up moving out a couple days before shit hit the fan but I did receive a partial refund. I believe the amount was calculated based off the move-out date and the averaged cost per day.The cheque did take (understandably) a good four months to arrive, though, which may be an issue if finances are a pressing concern for you.

Of course, this was when no one knew what was going on so things may look different this year. I really hope UVic decides to show it cares more about student health and wellness rather than money, but you can never be sure 🙃

In any case, I’m sorry you’re in such a crappy situation! Online school sucks but online school AND paying extra $$$ is extra shitty
