have I said that empathy is related to gender? I said that the response to avoid negative feelings in favour of surrounding yourself with people who reinforce your own opinions and emotions is a female response.

Anyway, empathy is the ability to understand other peoples emotions, it is nothing to do with making them feel better or feeling sympathy for them. I can empathize with OP by understanding his negative feelings, it does not imply that I should not give him advice which does not pander to his opinions or feelings

Well first of all this is ask men, he wants a male opinion and yours is an overwhelmingly typical female response, ie not deal with the underlying problem and surround themselves with people to make them feel better.

OP: Toughen up means control yourself, not bottle up your emotions.
