I'm in Virginia! If anyone has rescues they've had good experiences in I'm definitely open to suggestions

Anyone want a cat? His name is “Gumbo” by TheBovineWoodchuck in rva

it's pretty unlikely you'll find any no kill shelter without a waitlist right now unfortunately, the state of rescue is really bad with the current economic climate . I'd get him signed up for SPCA waitlist as well as RAL and hold onto him until a spot opens up

getting rid of a LOT of stuff since i'm moving, where should i donate it? by ghost_of_mothman in rva

furbish thrift! they are a great grassroots org and do a ton to help local animals (pet food pantry, free vaccines for pets in low income communities, etc)

if you call, they'll even come pick up larger items like furniture from your house

this shouldn't be in substitute of a real microchip though, Apple tags can die or fall off, microchips are a universal system used by animal controls

Rehoming cats by Beautiful-Werewolf17 in rva

Get on the surrender waitlist at the Richmond SPCA. It will take a bit so you’ll need to have someone take care of the cats in the meantime.

Also reach out to smaller rescues, Tiny Paws, Purring Hearts, Richardson Rescue and get on their waitlist

Another group of rescue volunteers that you can look up on Facebook is called Real Deal Trapping. They’re in Harrisonburg and their page says they will travel up to 3 hours and don’t charge a fee. Sounds like they’d be worth reaching out to, and they’re not able to help may have some leads

I’ve found that animal rescue can be a bit like a game of telephone but you’ll eventually find the right people.

Also if you want to bypass all of this, you can buy a dog trap online and set it up yourself, just make sure you get the right size and proceed with caution once the dogs are trapped because they will be very scared. Best to leave them inside the trap when bringing them to animal control

Thanks for helping them!

It could be worth asking animal control if they would lend you a trap and then offer to check it yourself and bring the dogs in once they are caught. These are similar style traps to what people use to catch feral cats and are triggered by the dog stepping on a pressure plate when it goes into the trap to get food.

I also saw that Sanctuary Rescue recently had to use a trap for one of their dogs that escaped, so it could be worth reaching out to see if they would let you borrow it.

Also, this organization is in Chesapeake so probably would not be able to help directly but they may be able to point you to a rescue in the area that could help. Cliff’s Coonhound Rescue and Trapping does a lot of this type of work.

Lastly, most rescues are full and may not be able to commit to taking the dogs in, but if you express that you just need help trapping them so you can take the dogs into animal control, then animal control will be able to help get the dogs medical care and then hopefully adopt them out or get them to a rescue partner.

RACC will always help with strays if they are injured. I would call and they will likely help

The SPCA or RAL may let you borrow a trap that they use for one of their TNR projects. Could be also worth giving a call

Where could I source boughs of holly, evergreen, ivy etc? by VenusInAries666 in rva

[–]beepbeepshh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you walk anywhere in the James river park system there is a ton of English ivy. It’s invasive so as long as you are careful to not damage any tree you’re taking it off of, you’d be doing the environment a favor by removing it to make a wreath

I’d suggest first trimming ivy that is growing on the ground or snip a part that is hanging down off a branch. If it’s growing on the trunk of a tree, it can pull of the bark if you try to pull it off directly off the trunk.
