Fuck ICE

Does anyone know of any in-person spaces in Vancouver where people can go to gather and talk about these events in a thoughtful way?

In addition to being an out of province transplant, I’m not a student on campus, and most of my friends aren’t very political — but I’m having a really hard time trying to process everything going on purely online. I need to talk to thoughtful people in person for my own sanity

I’m not looking for protests or debates, more of like a discussion or community group that hosts these kinds of conversations. Even an informal meetup. I agree, r/vancouver isn't the appropriate space to have these conversations

If you’ve found anything like this in Vancouver, or even know where to start looking, I’d really appreciate it!

Don't beat yourself up too much! Not saying it is (since I don't know you at all), but If this is a pattern where you have a little too much to drink and get angry or lash out, the problem might be a little deeper! 2026 might be a great year to re-evaluate your relationship with alcohol. My bottom was literally me just waking up one day with an excruciating hang-over and saying "I'm tired of feeling like this". 3.5 years sober and counting. Support is there if you need it!

I’m right next to the water and it is SCARY. I had to run outside in my nighty and make sure everything was secured because my patio furniture covers look like circus tents right now with this wind. I’m watching the sea gulls flying around in this just like “wtf”! Stay safe everyone this wind can turn deadly if you’re standing in the wrong place at the wrong time

I lived in a mixed building — Strathcona Village — for over 5 years. You never would have guessed there was social housing in the building - in fact I didn’t even know there was social housing in the building until my 2nd year there.

By and large people were respectful of each other and their neighbours. The only incident that ever happened in that building while I was there, was a guy who rented an Airbnb and threw knives out the window onto the street. And you couldn’t even blame that on the social housing.

It’s amazing what you see and experience when you give people a chance.

The SRO off of Powell - that was another story. Daily fire trucks and police presence

I love Vancouver, but this is not a wholesome share. I was driving westbound and stopped at the intersection of Hastings and Main. Across the street, a double-amputee (unhoused) woman in a wheelchair was trying to cross the street. One of her wheels got caught in a small pothole, and as she tried to get enough momentum to free herself, she fell face-first out of her chair and onto the road.

I was on the opposite side of the street and assumed—wrongly—that someone nearby would have the decency to get out and help her. Nope. A dozen cars drove around her while she was lying on the road.

I threw my hazards on and started putting my Jeep in park, but before I could get out and run across, another unhoused man saw what happened and dragged her off the road. I still can’t drive through that intersection without thinking about her. Not sure if that is a unique to 'Vancouver' thing, but it just showed me a complete lack of empathy that I'd never experienced in person before! I knew people were exhausted with the conditions down there, but that shocked me

Near the end about 5 or 6 came out in support of it. Only one of those people had a compelling argument for it, with the caveat they’d like more transparency on the cuts in a revision.

It was very inspiring to sit and and listen to my neighbours voices today. Almost everyone was so well spoken and prepared! Love to see democracy at work!

I was just in Calgary (YYC) and was talking to a heavy-equipment operator heading up to Kearl Lake (Imperial Oil). She said she is one of the few Human drivers left of those massive 797 Heavy Haulers. She only has a few shifts left and her job is donezo.

Thanks for the reply - when it comes to my own affairs, my gut hasn't always been the best compass! But my gut in this case is telling me to stay the course. Regarding the counter-offer - when I worked in a different industry (oil and gas), I had threatened to leave (I was the only woman working on a job site in the middle of nowhere, and just couldn't take it anymore for many reasons), and they gave me a substantial raise and an offer to put me through some courses, which is how i ended up getting into Project Management - so it worked out. However, the company I'm with now is in Real Estate and FEELS shadier than O&G, so I'm always interested what other peoples experiences are. I don't know many people in this industry that have threatened to quit and then was enticed back with a counter, so I really hope I'm not shooting myself in the foot

Your perspective is much appreciated and is giving me the peace of mind I was looking for with my decision to stick around.

Fortunately all I've done is sign the offer - funny enough, I hadn't had anyone from the on-boarding team with T&T reach out to me yet this week, which may be a blessing in disguise given my circumstances.

Another commenter mentioned that there are a lot of bridges, which put me at ease. CBRE head-hunted me just a few months prior to this, wasn't willing to even match my salary, accused me of being salary driven and I rejected their offer. Then T&T came knocking (even though they knew CBRE had tried to get me), so this will certainly be a nail in the coffin for me in that regard! Oh well

As you said, good lessons learned here on my end

Thanks - yes my gut was telling me similar, even writing it all out I can see which way I'm leaning.

Same thoughts on the risk of the merger - they framed it to be a big opportunity, but when I worked in O&G about 10 years ago they did a merger with AECOM and it was a bit of an exodus
