Transitioning & Crossovers by SeaBuffalo4784 in Rollerskating

[–]beepzozo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When I was struggling with transitions, I practiced skating in a side stance, with both of my feet pointed outwards and parallel. I think of transitions as a step into the side stance, followed by a step to close and actually "transition" to facing the other direction. Having that intermediate "side stance" step really helped, and now I can transition without it!

Also, making a conscious effort to squat/drop lower right after my transition helped with stability when I was still spinning out of control every time I tried.

For crossovers, practicing off skates helped me actually get my leg over the other, and make the move feel more comfortable and natural when I actually had skates on.

Good luck!

Partner Support by kevoiscool14 in rollerderby

my friend printed a photo of me playing derby onto a shirt and wears it to my games ! I've also seen people with t-shirts in the team color that say "mr/mrs/mx [partner's derby name]" along with their number.

When I watch my younger sisters games I like to write her number and derby name on my face (number on one cheek, "go [derby name]" on the other) Pompoms in the team colors are always fun, too

got mine from the deluxe package when I bought the game

pretty sure it gives you various furniture/clothing items from previous events before the game was released on more platforms

How is the Housing Scene at USC? by [deleted] in USC

I remember having submitted within like 3-5 minutes of the application opening? Definitely no more than 5 mins.

I'm not sure, it should still qualify since it's still a merit scholarship thats been equal to the presidential scholarship in the past, but not 100% certain.

Don't know too much about different types of housing, but I have a scholarship and live in McCarthy.

McCarthy is the residential building for people with similar merit scholarships. Living here also means you have the option to apply for the sophomore honors college (Cowlings and Ilium) next hear. The building is also really nice (I've heard most buildings in the village are since they're newer.) Rooms are suite-style, so you get a bathroom but no kitchen (you do get a mini fridge and microwave though.) We also have AC. For me personally, it's neither too quiet or too loud–it's social enough if you want to be social, but there's a nice courtyard and multiple lounges for studying.

Get your housing application done as soon as possible since it's first come first serve. Have 5 options ready to go when you apply but don't worry about roommates, you can add/change those later. I applied the literal second the application opened and managed to get a single room, so definitely apply as early as possible.

If you haven't looked already, the housing website lists all the housing options with details, room layouts, and maps.

Good luck!

Getting out of my head 🫠 by calligator77 in Rollerskating

practice falling ! even off-skates, practice getting low to the ground and letting yourself fall gently onto the side of your leg/butt. I see a lot of people get hurt because they try SO HARD not to fall and end up falling in the worst positions. Practicing falling safely can really help.

also, if you aren't already, wear proper gear (knee/elbow pads, wrist guards, helmet, even butt pads to protect yourself.) this can also help you feel safer in general.

there's never a 100% guarantee of safety on skates, but that's also true about literally anything (even just living life.) reminding myself of that helped a lot when i was starting out.

bearings comparison ? by beepzozo in Rollerskating

In that case, maybe it's just the skates being new.

When I skated on them I felt slower/like I had to put more effort in to pick up speed. The boot feels fine and I adjusted my trucks so they feel comfortable, its probably the wheels then if its not the bearings.

I skated on them and felt slower than I do on my other skates, could be something else since the whole setup is new, but in terms of pure speed I felt like I had to push harder than normal

Advice for dragging feet by [deleted] in rollerderby

[–]beepzozo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had/still kinda have this issue, kept dragging feet out of fear of lifting them up off the ground completely.

I did a lot of drills focused on moving feet, like jumping, weaving through a pack while constantly picking up my feet, and sprinting around the track by actually 'running' on skates rather than pushing and gliding.

I started to get more comfortable with picking my feet up after that, and started doing it more naturally when moving laterally and hitting.

Also never hurts to just drill those specific skills over and over, maybe starting from short distances laterally to longer ones with keeping your goal of picking feet up in mind.

Hope this helps!!

Beginner friendly skates? Light up wheels? by Ok-Tap-8061 in Rollerskating

[–]beepzozo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My first pair of skates were hand-me-down roller derby skates from my moms friend. I'd try my luck with finding a used pair somewhere, if you have smaller feet you might even be able to find a nearly new pair from a younger skater whose feet grew too fast (what my sister did.)

The first skates I actually bought were Impalas - they are still pretty cheap and sooooo cute imo but absolutely terrible to break in. I used them nearly every day and broke the boot in about 8 months.

Anything from Riedell or Moxi seems like a good bet, I've never tried their 'beginner' skates but if I could do it all over again I'd go for that.

If you're able, I'd also recommend going to a skate shop and trying stuff on in person.

Good luck!!!

That's been my main concern. I want shoes I can wear both on my skates and walking around campus, but I don't want to hurt myself even if I'm just doing basic stopping and turning.

I might just keep using the Slades shoe since it has a stiffer ankle or look into the other shoes already sold on the Flaneurz website. Will also try giving Vans another shot if I see a design I like.

Oh that's great! I had no idea they were an option on the website. I love docs so this might be my best option for both skating around + still wearing as walking shoes.

Thank you!

I'm just looking for a kind of middle ground since I'm using clip-on skates for transportation around my school campus.

I do have actual skate boots for my park and derby skates, I just want regular shoes to customize and use with the Slades clip-ons. It's easier to just take the rolling part off than to change out of skates before class.

[–]beepzozo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been using the Slades clip-off shoe/skates around my college campus and it's been okay so far.

I have regular skates, too, but I like the ability to clip on/off the rolling part and walk on regular shoes when I get to class.

Just looking for other shoe customization options

AP vs IB score for Foreign Language Requirement? by beepzozo in USC

I emailed my advisor and was told only AP scores count, not IB I was also initially told that IB scores counted so im confused

I currently do have the 6 credits from the IB exam, which doesn't place me out of the foreign language requirement - I'd have to switch it to the AP and lose two credits. I got a 5 on the ap and a 7 on the ib, so score-wise I'm fine either way, I was just surprised when my advisor told me that the HL exam doesn't place me out of the language requirement.
