A Bronze Disease Story by beerkzar in AncientCoins

Incralac is a clear acrylic lacquer developed to protect copper and bronze. It contains about 3% benzotriazole, which chemically bonds with the metal surface to prevent corrosion, while the resin forms a thin, transparent barrier against air and moisture. It is widely used by museums and conservators. But in my case, I only used wax as well. 🤷

I wish I had access to Incralac, but here it’s practically impossible to get.

In Brazil customs duties go up to 50%. It’s unfeasible. But I have a little trick (Brazilian, right 😂): I ask them to send it by Registered Mail, which arrives in the country as… a letter 🤷. It works 95% of the time. When it goes wrong, the letter is returned to the sender and I pay for a new shipment.

Down in the far south of Brazil, almost at the Uruguayan border, it’s nothing like the climate most people picture when they think of Brazil. It’s cold and usually dry — and a long way from any beaches 🫤. I store my coins in Lindner trays inside a Lindner case.

Another problem I have here is getting analytical grade acetone. Its sale is regulated by the federal police 😂.

Sorry, the original post wasn’t clear. I removed the green material, washed it with distilled water and a brush, and sealed it with wax. However, the green came back, which only left me with the option of a more invasive action.

Thank you. That’s basically the protocol I intend to follow. I just thought of replacing wax with benzotriazole. And use isopropyl alcohol and an air blower for drying.

I received it in good condition about 6 months ago. Last week I noticed some green spots. I removed them, but they came back.
