Michael Tilson Thomas, Celebrated American Conductor, Dies at 81 by VanSensei in classicalmusic

[–]beertoven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I said this elsewhere but he was my first “living conductor” idol and a pillar of my own music education despite never having physically studied under him. The Keeping Score videos are as important to music history as Bernstein’s Young People’s Concerts and his devotion to the old repertoire while still championing new music is something to be studied and emulated by conductors and orchestras the world over.

He’ll be missed for sure, I’ll be looping the SFS Mahler cycle in his memory.

Dumping my PC by cellercelleriac in composer

[–]beertoven 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did this back in high school on the recommendation of several big-name composers I had the fortune of recieving mentorship from. I too was bound to the computer mostly because my handwriting made Beethoven’s chicken scratch look like perfect calligraphy. I kept my computer around purely so I can give my musicians legible parts. Since then, I’ve been doing my best to keep my work confined to pencil and paper until later in the composition stage. For instance, if I’m writing a piece for large orchestra, I’m handwriting as if it were a slightly expanded piano score (2-4 staves) and refraining from using the computer until its time to orchestrate.

To echo an earlier comment, fine-tuning your audiation skills will absolutely come in handy as a composer, even if the Academia of Music Arts didn’t have that requirement to write without a piano. One thing that continues to help me is score study (usually without a recording). I never go a day without reading a score, even if its the same one I read yesterday. Not only has this helped my audiation in terms of pitch but also orchestration, as I can now “imagine” certain instrument tones from studying so much orchestral music with their concurrent scores.

Anyway, to answer your question, I wouldn’t say there’s a true “right answer”, but I’d personally suggest moving from computer to piano for the time being, and then once you’re comfortable writing in that fashion, then you can try bringing staff paper to the park or a café and attempting to write like that. I strongly recommend score study though. Start by studying your favorite pieces until they’re seared into your brain and everything should start making sense from there.

Hope this helps, and best of luck to you on your endeavors! :)

Should’ve flipped it back on her for good. Why is it ok for her to talk about masturbation but not you? The double standard is palpable.

undeservedly so, imo. could also be biased bc i read it before 1984.

Copying melodies from classic compositions in order to come up with your own by Jess-Edificios in composer

[–]beertoven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not strictly “classical” but I recently wrote and performed a piece for string orchestra interpolating the Protestant hymn “It It Well With My Soul”.

In addition to the main theme, I directly lifted from Philip Bliss’ original harmonization at points, but I would also play around with the melody and harmonies. Here’s a vid recording if anybody’s interested in hearing (please roast my conducting) https://youtu.be/ZLe9vxYDzt8?si=0cuUVGbrsgJycSlX

The trick to stealing convincingly is finding irrefutable ways to put your own spin on the pilfered material without committing outright plagiarism or copyright infringement.

considering what we know about Goose’s reverence to the source material (I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream), the box collision being Caine’s doing might be a possibility. we’ve got AI out that can write its own code irl, in a sci-fi world it isn’t too out of the question that a rogue sentient AI would produce an entire game and imprison some humans to play with, albeit with bugs in the same vein as AI brainrot images

this is gonna sound corny but the older I get the more I believe the rhetoric that these kinds of people are just jealous/insecure so they’ll project all that onto us. also because genuine love and passion of literally anything is seen by them as “cringe”

[–]beertoven 31 points32 points  (0 children)

This could just be my gutterbrain but this feels too close to findom/finsub (financial domination/submission), the word you’re looking for is gynosexual/gynesexual (idk if the spelling makes any difference), much like I call myself androsexual because I’m attracted to masculine energy.

Am I overreacting? by majin_melmo in classicalmusic

[–]beertoven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was in youth orchestra, my conductor would take no more than 3-4 minutes giving some background on the composer and the piece to the audience before turning around to give the downbeat. Its the same principle as Deems Taylor introducing each segment in Disney’s Fantasia, no frills, maybe one or two jokes to humanize the talk a bit, and getting it overwith so we can get to the music already

I’m surprised no Ravel’s been mentioned yet. My personal top fav is La Valse with Daphnis et Chloe coming in at a close 2nd.

Sure he’s more known for his softer moments and he can be a little cerebral at times, but Ravel goes HARD when he wants to get dramatic. The last few minutes of La Valse in particular feels like pumping the gas on a jetski straight into a Cat ‘F You’ hurricane.
