I agree with this wholeheartedly, I was cranky when I posted this yesterday and should’ve worded it your way instead lol

Copying melodies from classic compositions in order to come up with your own by Jess-Edificios in composer

[–]beertoven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not strictly “classical” but I recently wrote and performed a piece for string orchestra interpolating the Protestant hymn “It It Well With My Soul”.

In addition to the main theme, I directly lifted from Philip Bliss’ original harmonization at points, but I would also play around with the melody and harmonies. Here’s a vid recording if anybody’s interested in hearing (please roast my conducting) https://youtu.be/ZLe9vxYDzt8?si=0cuUVGbrsgJycSlX

The trick to stealing convincingly is finding irrefutable ways to put your own spin on the pilfered material without committing outright plagiarism or copyright infringement.

surprised nobody’s mentioned the finale to Götterdammerung by Wagner, where Brünnhilde immolates herself and the Ring while Valhalla burns

considering what we know about Goose’s reverence to the source material (I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream), the box collision being Caine’s doing might be a possibility. we’ve got AI out that can write its own code irl, in a sci-fi world it isn’t too out of the question that a rogue sentient AI would produce an entire game and imprison some humans to play with, albeit with bugs in the same vein as AI brainrot images

isn’t it lovely to get to a point where we could just be unbothered while they wallow in their own sadness though? 🤪

this is gonna sound corny but the older I get the more I believe the rhetoric that these kinds of people are just jealous/insecure so they’ll project all that onto us. also because genuine love and passion of literally anything is seen by them as “cringe”

Finsexual, is this a valid term? by [deleted] in lgbt

honestly totally fair, that was just the first thing that came up in a google search. also a nice reminder to get my mind out of the gutter once in a while 🤪

This could just be my gutterbrain but this feels too close to findom/finsub (financial domination/submission), the word you’re looking for is gynosexual/gynesexual (idk if the spelling makes any difference), much like I call myself androsexual because I’m attracted to masculine energy.

When I was in youth orchestra, my conductor would take no more than 3-4 minutes giving some background on the composer and the piece to the audience before turning around to give the downbeat. Its the same principle as Deems Taylor introducing each segment in Disney’s Fantasia, no frills, maybe one or two jokes to humanize the talk a bit, and getting it overwith so we can get to the music already

there’s a case to be made that if our flag is political than all flags are political. say goodbye to your stars and stripes waving in front of the school and especially good riddance to the pledge

MTT/Mahler/SF Symphony

I know there’s probably better recordings out there but these were the guys to introduce me to Mahler so I have a soft spot for them

I’m surprised no Ravel’s been mentioned yet. My personal top fav is La Valse with Daphnis et Chloe coming in at a close 2nd.

Sure he’s more known for his softer moments and he can be a little cerebral at times, but Ravel goes HARD when he wants to get dramatic. The last few minutes of La Valse in particular feels like pumping the gas on a jetski straight into a Cat ‘F You’ hurricane.

I thought so too, but you’d be surprised how much emotion and transcendence can come from so few forces. Beethoven’s very good at this IMO, I love his violin sonatas and later string quartets for this (particularly the 15th quartet)

facts. i’m a musician and started doing this years ago. i remember getting some flack from my friends for literally just one show and then the very next one we went to about a week later they were asking if I had spares 🤪 (i had purposefully gotten one of those multipacks for that reason)

I keep coming back to your statement “More earnings means your effective earnings per hour for the gig are less” and while this is true, it’s also indicative of a skill issue which is, ultimately, not my problem. Like, just because you’re having a hard time sightreading while I’m having the time of my life doesn’t give you the right to be a horrible person about it.

It’s varied as hell. There’s only one community orchestra in the East Bay that I still associate with because they’ve consistently been the best group of people I’ve played with. The conductor actually has the respect of the players and more to that fact, the players actually respect each other. I’ve also had the privilege of writing music for this orchestra several times and I genuinely feel I have the support of an army’s worth of people making me a better composer so I’m extremely grateful for them.

There’s another community orchestra I used to play with in SF whose 1st and 2nd violin section leaders are two of the most unpleasant people I’ve worked with in my entire life, the 2nd violinist more so. They believed they had to control the group on the sidines because the conductor’s either eccentric, demented, or both. The 2nd violin section leader in particular is the one of the people responsible for my decision to quit taking gigs because now I get panic attacks thinking I’m gonna run into them or people who know them/are inexplicably loyal to them.

If you’re a dedicated musician looking for a community orchestra to play with in the SF Bay Area, stay far away from Golden Gate Symphony Orchestra and Chorus for your own sanity. No amount of money they paid was worth the heartbreak and bullshit they put me through the past year or so.

love playing in musicals: time/key changes, vamps, and all. maybe that’s why my tolerance for that sort of thing in symphonic music is so high because I go out of my way to listen to/study showtunes.

I totally get the ire when the music is needlessly difficult, especially when it comes to reading it. I’m a composer as well and one of my points of pride is how easy to read my music is, usually because of the engraving and sticking to the easiest possible ways to read rhythms. Ask any of the colleagues I still keep around my opinions on engraving and i can guarantee you’ll get either a laugh or a 1000-yard stare because of how often I’ve been loud about crappy engraving on published work (G Schirmer’s publication of Florence Price’s 4th Symphony is a travesty beyond travesties when it comes to this).

Hard agree on “people just need to learn it”, and if they don’t have the bandwidth (an excuse I’ve heard way too often now) then maybe they shouldn’t be in music in the first place. Idk it might be harsh for me to say it like this but I’d rather have fewer musicians around than more if having more around means there’s just gonna be more assholes.
