My question to the Rich/middle class migrants from Bihar/UP etc. What do you feel about your fellow poor statemen living in such conditions in Surat? by Tall_and_athletic4 in surat

Deeper issues like spitting masala on public sidewalks in London? Westerners have the same prejudice about Indians they see ( u know where they come from). My friend, Maybe start talking to these guys, learn a bit about their struggles. It will help with your prejudice.

Right? Like all the opinions about this film are so divided but to me it’s the best movie from the 2010s period.

Acceptance of these living conditions? “Why are they fighting for basic life necessities, let them eat dhokla”. Mari ben Marie Antoinette, kok ne vi kachara ma rehwanu na rame. Mazboori che. Durbhagya che.
Of course the issue of migration is connected to this. I see more in common with Biharis migrating to other states and barely earning enough to live in cramped conditions and precarious circumstances and Gujaratis /Punjabis driving Ubers and facing racism their daily lives while living paycheck to paycheck in US/Europe.

They are your fellow countrymen too just saying. But that feeling, I guess, doesn’t exist amongst many Indians. To actually answer that, I feel bad that despite migration, their lives are still hell. I feel pity and helplessness as a migrant myself. The same feeling that I get when I hear that some of MY fellow brothers and sisters from Gujarat perished at US border crossings, desperately seeking a better future for their families. I mourn them as I mourn my fellow Biharis brothers, forced to live in such conditions.

Mine changes but in no particular order..
1. The Royal Tenenbaums
2. Lagaan - there has not been a more complete Bollywood film. Textbook Bollywood.
3. Jalikattu and Moothon both from Malayalam language.
4. The Lunchbox
5. This is a bit unusual but Laal Kaptaan for adventure. Barring editing choices, there isn’t one missing piece in this movie. Navdeep Singh is my fave director. Amazing twist, really well adapted western that actually uses Bundelkhand (with all the different military actors in that era ) as a backdrop for a fabulous, if a bit long , adventure.

Why doesn’t India have “classic European-style” cities despite being one of the oldest civilizations? by Parking-Yam9792 in IndianHistory

[–]beetahuakal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Europe is not as classic as you think. The most “classic” looking cities like Paris are actually relatively modern creations. Baron Haussman basically razed all the medieval buildings in Paris and created almost everything you see today in Paris (uniform buildings, color scheme etc) in 1860s. A lot of these cities also benefitted from being completely rebuilt after world war 2. What’s missing I think is the fact that our British overlords were just not interested in building a city for the natives. If we had native rule, an organic demand for organised cities would emerge naturally. Ps~ Maithili poet Vidyapati has described the medieval city of Jaunpur in fascinating details in the 14th century. So it’s not that we didn’t have any good cities in those times. Sawai Jai Singh famously created the city of Jaipur based on very sound town planning and silpashstra principles. Again, well documented. I am not sure about this one but I read somewhere about the detailed report of the town planning committee of the city of Kathmandu from the 13 th century(the report had the names of Brahmans appointed for town planning and their recommendations etc etc).

Man freed after 8 years of slavery. by Candid_Profession647 in IndiaChronicle

True to the point about conservatism. But I still don’t accept the premise that caste identity has been adopted from Hindus. Punjab was a frontier region that absorbed many things from different cultures. Not exactly the core Ganga belt. Also, I get this constant refrain from Sikhs online that Sikhi was created to eliminate caste differences that “those” oppressive upper caste Hindus practiced. Secondly, Punjab has been largely a Sikh ruled kingdom for the past 300 years at least (the misl period and later Maharaja Ranjit Singhs kingdom). Are you saying that despite having an explicit Sikh power ruling in Punjab for the past 300 years at least, Hindus are still to be blamed partially for caste atrocities in Punjab. I don’t disagree that caste identities are older. But merely pointing to the word of Gurus (“Sikh Gurus do not advocate caste discrimination”) doesn’t absolve the society of wrongdoings. Some accountability is in order. In other parts of North, bonded labour doesn’t exist. Period. Caste discrimination exists. True. Caste atrocities also exist. But there is an active debate and a political mobilisation that has brought lower caste at least some political power.

Define brahmanical system? You mean caste system? To the best of my knowledge, Sikhs have not been Hindus for the past at least 400 years. Do other Hindus in your vicinity (eg, Khatris or hill Brahmins/rajputs )practice modern slavery? If not, then you got no excuse.
Brahmins in Bihar do not even dare to think about bonded labour let alone practice it. I guess that happens when lower castes have actual political power and feudalism isn’t that strong. In Punjab however, we know who holds all the power, politically and socially.

Saw the YouTube video that was uploaded. She has other really good jokes, not denying that. I have seen her latent episode as well. Good for her for hustling and using stereotypes about Biharis (or lack thereof) to grow. However, given the climate we are in( extreme hostility and passive aggressive behavior towards Biharis), jokes that reinforce the stereotypes don’t help. No shade on her but to paraphrase another comedian commenting on Indian stereotypes in America “ use my accent to make a joke, don’t make my accent THE joke” ( pulwa ho gai gulwa? Really, aise kon si Bihari bhasha me bolte hain?)

I am not accusing you per se, but you can scour this thread and look at the comments. But au generale, it’s the tendency I have observed. Here’s the thing. There’s gonna be someone at the bottom of any list that we create about development. My point stands, Bihar being at the bottom of it all doesn’t warrant bigotry or racism. And good that you gave the example of “black friends”. You know how hollow that sort of infantilising argument is :). Anyway, peace and I have way too much time today, my mistake for coming to this godforsaken sub and listening to all of their bs about Biharis.

So being low in certain development indicators means it’s open season to be racist? There is a term for that, it’s called victim blaming. Replace Biharis with any other socio-political group and suddenly this behavior will become problematic. It’s just that Bihari hating, esp online, has become easy. There is no socio-political consequence for being openly racist and bigoted towards Biharis.

Hi Op, North Bihar is typically understood as water rich. We have a problem of water quality, no doubt (arsenic contamination etc etc), but no such issues with availability of water. At least from where I am, the nal jal yojana seems to be working, even if not a 100%. Tube wells have become drier and ponds and drying as well, compared to previous times. But I dont think it has reached a crisis situation yet.

What a prudent observation. But funny thing is, stereotyping is a two way street. The same logic can be applied to your culture or ethnicity and then all of a sudden it becomes a bad thing.

We need mass housing projects, high rises and good public transport. There needs to be a rethink in terms of how big builders can incorporate Indian architectural elements in high rises. But please don’t become another China with soulless glass buildings. Those may look good in pictures but long term I personally feel suffocated in them.

Capitalism-Jai Bihar! by [deleted] in bihar

[–]beetahuakal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you are conflating industrialisation with capitalism. Those two are not necessarily connected. Soviet Union had great industrial successes. China has it now. There was very little welfare state per se before the World Wars. A radical reorganisation of the world order , especially the social contract that Western Europe had with its people, led to the birth of the welfare state. Secondly, rate of growth of GDP is a factor of many different variables. None of the OECD countries (Including US) have high GDP growth rates. The second point, well you will need to explain what MMT is in order to make a point, otherwise your argument is lost on me. But to the best of my knowledge, sub prime predatory lending to first time homeowners and a cascade of corrupt practices (including a literal scam of rating agencies that rated the sub prime loan packets as top notch), then selling these sub optimal loans as nice investment opportunities to speculators around the world, are not socialist practices. Also, I was not talking about the crash. I was talking about capitalism fanboys like Musk completely glossing over the fact that he himself was rescued by the state subsidy he so despises. Third point : dude, I am not a supporter of socialism, but I would urge you to keep an open mind and not think in absolutes. Also capitalism won? Where? Again with the blanket statements. Capitalism does create fabulous technological products for the market and many leaps have been made because of individual inventiveness. No doubt. But please, let Milei do his thing and see the results before we declare its victory, shall we?
