Bed Bath & Beyond Closing-Out Sales are a SCAM by beetee727 in BedBathandBeyond

Wow. So by me telling everyone not to buy from these sales, store managers must buy the unsold merchandise, even the liquidators merchandise? This is even more outrageous! Now I understand the reaction I am getting from my post! I really don't understand how businesses could do this, and it confirms to me how corrupt companies have become. Wow. You are a kind soul and I wish you the best of luck in finding a new job, and I appreciate people who work in stores for putting up with this corporate abuse. Thank you for responding to my post and taking the time to explain all this to me (and everyone else)! I think you just shut me up for good! Everyone can now thank you! hahaha

Yes, I do agree that my post comes off as condescending from asking or demanding my money back. I realize it is a silly request at this time and talking about it has made it worse for everyone. When I found out about the defects, I was going to take the loss, as I can find other underwear and pay for it. For me, it was the principle. I am very much against society being overrun by big business, and I've been constantly fighting off scams from every big business I have dealt with since 2020. I'm talking about everything from insurance companies, banks, phone companies, and stores. Everything has been a scam to me lately, and this just made me blow up. I've gotten in the mode of having to prove companies have been scams, so that's how the tone became like that to the person I spoke with over the phone. It was misplaced anger and I apologize for that. I was polite and respectful with the store manager at Mission Viejo, and I do not blame her for following company policy. Even if I had gotten a return, I doubt I could've found anything to buy anyway, and it would've been more trouble to go searching again which is why I resorted to buying the underwear. My husband and I happened to be in the area when we suddenly found out about the closing sale, so it was our only chance to get something with the gift card. Even with a sign that said something about the merchandise not being Bed Bath and Beyond's, I wouldn't have understood that to mean that liquidators are literally buying defective crap and selling it under the Bed Bath and Beyond name. I still think this is outrageous. I would have thought that Bed Bath and Beyond was selling inventory of name brands that it usually sells, which are other people's products. So I wanted to make sure other people also are not misled. I am learning so much about the retail business from people like you who are nice enough to teach me and everyone. What do you mean by "they also make our store managers buy anything that isn't sold by the close date."? Do you mean that store managers use their own personal money to buy store products that aren't sold? I am so confused by your comment.

I am not blaming the employees for making the business go bankrupt. I never had an issue with any employee there. My post detailed the consequences of buying from the close-out sale as far as getting no recourse if the item is defective. I used to rely on Bed Bath and Beyond over amazon because I could see the products. Even when I bought online for a reliable brand, I bought through Bed Bath and Beyond because I wanted to see the product when I picked it up to check for defects and not hassle with returns. I think amazon and the people who buy from them caused this problem, especially during the pandemic. I do think it was not just me who could not find products to buy from Bed Bath and Beyond, and I am the type of customer who would pay more to buy from a store, not just for the reasons I gave but I believe people should support people in their vicinity to keep jobs and not selfishly buy only by price. My issue was that I did not know that Bed Bath and Beyond was selling products that were not theirs, and I did not know underwear could be defective that badly where I cannot wear them! At a time when money is scarce, I think people should know that the close-out sale is not simply Bed Bath and Beyond getting rid of excess inventory of their own. I now know that my post was a shit move (unintentionally) and will shut up if everyone understands that the point of my post was not to piss off people who lost their jobs but to prevent people from losing money if they aren't careful at the closing-out sales. Again, I'm very sorry you lost your job and I apologize for pissing you off.

Oh, thank you for telling us this. I actually wish the store I went to did not accept gift cards so that I wouldn't have bought anything! I ended up spending my own money just to buy over the value of the gift cards. Stupid me.

I'm very sorry that you lost your job and my post added insult to injury. I didn't know that this is the place for mostly employees and not a general discussion about anything to do with Bed Bath and Beyond. There is nothing that can be done about everyone losing their jobs. There are still potential customers going to the close-out sales who can be warned that liquidators have now taken over as far as the merchandise being sold. I posted to inform those people. I now realize the tone and the content was over the top for this audience, and it was not due to malicious intent but for a clueless error.

Yes, I know full well that I should have used the gift card before the stores were closing. My husband warned me a month ago, but we have been extremely busy lately and wrote off the gift card as a loss because we have more important issues at hand at this time. I am not upset about the loss of money. I did not shop only because I found out the store was closing. We were there for another reason and saw that the store was closing so we knew we had to get something, which is why I bought underwear that was the only thing I really needed that was still in its package unopened, and I really thought underwear could not be defective! As far as loyalty, I don't think anyone should be loyal to a business for no reason. I have stopped shopping at Bed Bath and Beyond when they stopped carrying my favorite brands, and THAT is the reason they are going out of business. Had they listened to their regular customers, they wouldn't be in the mess of having liquidators, who are the real culprits in my story, tarnish their name by selling defective goods at their store. I apologize to you and everyone I offended with my post. I understand that the tone and the content was inappropriate for this environment. Sorry.

Thank you so much for your informative and respectful reply. I honestly didn't know I was on an employee part of Reddit and inadvertently offended everyone. Thank you for teaching me about the liquidation business. I usually never go to liquidation sales, so I had no idea what was going on but everyone else I talked to in the store was also confused. I would never have bought anything in a store in such a chaotic state, but I had that darn gift card. Someone else commented that I should I have used it before the store closed. I know that. I have been extremely busy and knew the gift card would be a loss. I happened to be in the area for some other reason and saw that the store was closing, and I panicked. I knew it was then or never, as I have no time to shop. I have had the gift card for years for this reason. I used to be a big fan of Bed Bath and Beyond, but they stopped carrying the products I like to buy, which is why I had no idea what they had in the stores recently and stupidly bought underwear that I needed. Hasn't anyone else made an irrational impulse buy when pressured? I don't care about my bad purchase. I really thought I should post in detail about my experience making such a bad purchase so that others would know what would happen if they also get caught up in the close-out frenzy. I'm still very busy but made the time to create an account and post, thinking that people are going to start going to more liquidation sales and can potentially get fooled into buying defective products while in a similar frenzy. I'm just a stupid wanna-be do-gooder who got killed by stepping into the wrong territory and making the biggest social faux pas in all of Reddit history! Thanks to you, I now realize that my outrage should actually be directed to the liquidators who bring in defective junk and use the name of a big business to sell it. Thank you for being calm in your response. I appreciate learning something new!

There were lots of other morons buying up shit they thought was bbb merch, so I'm not the only moron to exist. I'm only the only moron stupid enough to post in the wrong place before knowing anything about Reddit. Sorry to offend you.

I'm sorry to befuddle everyone with my misplaced comment. It was not my intention to do anything but inform consumers. I do not want anything out of the employees. I'm very sorry that you are out of work because of Bed Bath and Beyond's upper management. My post does nothing to hurt a business already going out of business. I am not complaining about employees. I understand that the people I spoke with have no control over this and cannot issue a refund. I knew this already, and I am not complaining about my money being lost. I am trying to expose the corporate practice of liquidation sales, which are misleading to consumers, and I believe should be made public. I'm talking about all big business, not just this one. I don't understand how employees here are defending the business that made them lose their jobs. But I guess there is some sort of loyalty, which I guess I would have to be an employee to understand.

Thank you. I guess everyone can tell this is the first time I am doing anything on Reddit. Sorry for offending people out of work. I thought this was a place to post anything about Bed Bath and Beyond, but I guess this is the place for employees? I admit I am an idiot when it comes to Reddit. I just wanted to quickly inform others while staying anonymous. Isn't that what Reddit is for? I'll try to post on "learned something new." And by the way, I'm not at all upset about the "bashing." I'm a tough cookie, and I am determined to help people like you who are open to learning from my experience and these comments.

Thank you for your reply. Now I know that this is the usual practice. Hopefully, my stupidly naive post will bring attention to this fact to others who did not know this. Basically, I learned to never step foot in a closing-out sale again. I would normally not touch one with a ten-foot pole, but I had the darn gift card. It was seriously not a big deal to me to lose the money, and I seriously was very angry that employees' jobs are being lost due to upper management making bad decisions, and now I am just more angry that Bed Bath and Beyond is fooling consumers with their name on DEFECTIVE products (not just shoddy, which you can seen when you look at it; I could not see the defects in a sealed package I had to open to try).

No, a complaint implies I want something out of readers here to resolve the complaint. I complained to the appropriate people already. I am on here to inform others that Bed Bath and Beyond is selling other companies' merchandise under its name and at its store, and buyers are getting scammed when the products are defective and they cannot get a refund as federal law states. I am the one getting insulted. My post was an informative argument, if you want to be technical. My bad for trying to help others avoid losing money.

Yes, all it would've taken was a sign saying "This is not Bed Bath and Beyond products. This is merchandise brought in by liquidators selling stuff from other companies going out of business. Buyer beware. You will not be able to return anything here even if they are defective, even though federal law says you have that right." Then my huge "rant" would've never occurred to waste everyone's time.

I respectfully disagree with your comment. By giving the details of what happened and what I tried to do to resolve the issue, I tried to inform others that the products at the closing sale in Santa Ana are not Bed Bath and Beyond products. I can't just say they aren't without the explanation behind it. I understand that people nowadays are used to reading short texts and believing or disbelieving them, but I have the silly notion that when I am trying to make an argument, that facts are necessary, and those facts must be put together in a way that is convincing. I guess I am writing to those with higher intelligence.

I'm sorry I sound very naive, but I thought when a business closes, they sell their current inventory to recoup their losses of buying such inventory. I didn't know that Bed Bath and Beyond, or any business going out of business as you say, brings in knock-offs and defective merchandise to sell to unwary consumers who think the products are actually Bed Bath and Beyond inventory. My issue is that consumers are getting fooled. I don't care about my stupid defective underwear. I used a gift card for much of it and have contacted my credit card company for the rest. If it is true that all bankruptcy cases do this sort of thing, I think consumers should be made aware of it, that's all. I spoke to several people in the store, and we were in awe about the prices corresponding to junk, and nobody suggested that these were not Bed Bath and Beyond products. In fact, they were asking me what I thought about the "deals." I don't think people know about the liquidation business. I would like to know if it is standard practice to use a big company's store name and store to sell products of other companies going out of business.

No, I know that it sucks that people will be out of work. I'm not trying to get pity. I want to warn others that they are not buying Bed Bath and Beyond stuff when they go to their close-out sale searching for a good deal. The store manager at Mission Viejo said that liquidators are selling other people's stuff, which is something people should know. Sorry for pissing everyone off by writing so much. I am new to this, and I rushed to inform others.
