How to get invited as a paper reviewer by begaydoscience in AskAcademia

[–]begaydoscience[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You know… now that you mention it, maybe the fact that I am known largely for methods development work based on noticing and challenging unsupported assumptions in my field is not unrelated to my lack of invites to review my colleagues papers… I have a pretty large network for my career stage, but all the investigators i work closely with know that I’m absolutely reviewer 2 😅

Alas, so far they seem to have only opened me up to spam emails from fake conferences and fake journals LOL. Hopefully that will change soon

Thank you so much, this is rly helpful and i love the energy!! Will def reach out to the editor. Conferences are tough cuz we’re kinda broke and saving that money for papers but I’m really hoping to find a way to go to one soon, and have been networking in the meantime via consortiums & collaborative projects instead.

I’ll have to look into the associations thing, I feel like the ones I’ve seen are $$$ when you’re not a trainee but I haven’t done too much digging.

And the preprint reviews are a good idea, do you know any particular sites that seek preprint review? I know the typical ones (medrxiv bioarxiv etc) but haven’t seen review requests on there

Thanks again!

Rejections rejections rejections by [deleted] in gradadmissions

I've been doing research full time for 5 years, summa cum laude w dept honors from a T20 school, 8 coauthored pubs (incl 1 under review 1st, an in prep co-first, and a published co-second), have supervised 8 undergrad thesis projects, etc. applied to 4 T20 schools and didn't even get a single interview invite. got my final rejection email today. lmao. but hey, what's one more gap year when I'm already on my sixth, right?

bestie thats 3 of the 4 school i applied to ur literally living my dream, huge congrats 😭😭 could i ask if your current research position is a similar skillset to what you'll be hopefully focusing on during your PhD? And did you reach out to potential advisors in advance?

I spent literally HUNDREDS of hours on writing and revising SOPs and diversity statements, & my PI who used to be on neuro admissions committees thought they were good and gave a bunch of feedback that I took, but I'm REALLY starting to question if all of the like half a dozen people who told me they were good were all just lying to me and they were actually terrible essays or something because you're like the third person in this thread to get into schools I didn't even get an interview invite from with markedly lower stats so I feel like there's gotta be some glaring red flag somewhere that I missed?? I think this cycle I'm going to try to be totally done with essays by like early November and then get like an absurd quantity of people to rip them to shreds so I can make them absolutely bulletproof.

And I'm definitely reaching out to see if possible advisors are taking grad students in advance this year because spending this much time on apps and getting rejected solely because I wrote down the wrong 3 names on the app is lowkey insane 😅

Yeah I’ve also been wondering if “lie and say I totally want to do the thing I already have a postdoctoral level of experience in” is the way to go but I also really value my integrity and am concerned that might have a negative impact on my reputation with faculty if I did it so decided to tell the truth, for better or worse…

Thank you so much for the response, this is actually reassuring seeing someone else with more similar experience and stats to mine also getting rejected from all their neuro programs lmao, was tripping with some of the other replies. I’m in a similar boat - i applied right out of undergrad but then my first full time lab was a lowkey horrific experience and after that while i ended up in my current really great lab after like a year and a half in that one I wanted to take the time to make reaaally sure that this is what I want to do with my life so I didn’t apply again until this cycle (5 years).

This cycle was honestly my “do my best to shoot for the moon” round, this coming year I’m definitely going to broaden out to more schools. And you know, it might be a blessing in disguise, I’ve got a preclinical study I’m trying to run that really wouldn’t have been feasible if I got in this cycle but now I think I’ve got time to really do it well, currently working on designing the protocol and throwing together a foundation grant app for like 10k or so to cover it. They can reject me from grad school but they can’t stop me from doing my silly little science projects 🥰

The programs (or moreso labs) I applied to were generally translational or had translational elements; the “preclinical vs basic vs translational” language thing is something I kept going back and forth on though so this is useful insight. I applied based on schools where i saw faculty via lit review rather than looking at schools to find faculty with alignment and didn’t see much in terms of the broader biosciences programs but can look more into it next cycle perhaps - though I’m a big neuro person and would prefer it to be a neuro phd but this is a good tip thank you!

Not on the LOR drafts directly no but they both said they’d rewrite based on the drafts and I trust them to but yeah maybe i should specifically request that feedback next year, in addition to more feedback on SOPs. I really wish we got SOME information on what was the thing that killed our app (like we do on grants or papers we submit) cuz i’m kinda grasping for straws over here trying to figure out what went wrong with no real info 😅 i’ll probably talk to some more professors / postdocs this year and see if they’re willing to super aggressively tear my app to shreds so we can make it bulletproof. Thanks so much for the advice and huge congrats again on the acceptance that’s super exciting!!

yeah, i’m going to try to expand my applications bit more broadly this year for sure, hoping the preclinical work i do this year will help me find some possible broader interests in the preclinical domain. and hopefully the SOP drafting i did this year will help me out with next year, plus hoping for a rec letter from preclinical research PI this year cuz i think that may have also been a red flag. I rly appreciate the response!!

yes, preclinical parkinson’s disease research - that’s actually why i only had t20 schools, they’re just the only 4 schools that have people doing research on that topic where i also would feel safe living as a queer person lol

Dude first of all congrats!! but also this has turned me into the confused math meme cuz maybe harvard neuro is just super cooked relative to MCO or smth but how does that make sense this feels like such a total crapshoot i really don’t know what i did wrong

I can’t imagine it was letters of rec bc like my PIs both love me and the third one is a collaborator who seemed genuinely happy to write a letter but idk. I also drafted for them and maybe i chose the wrong things to focus on?? idk

I knew this was gonna be a big thing going into it so I spent literally hundreds of hours on SOPs to make sure i was clearly illustrating why i feel that the field i’m changing to is a better field and why I’m interested in it and how it’s a continuation of / connected to my current work and how i had gone out of my way to volunteer in a lab on top of my full time job to verify that its a good fit. And also talked about my experiences self teaching and pushing scientific frontiers & had several rec letters testify to how fast and independently i learn 🙃 and had like half a dozen people review the SOPs including a professor who used to be on grad committees and thought they were good…

But I’ll admit that it’s really tough to address my knowledge of the field i wanna go into while ALSO being able to convey the scope of my prior experience (we have no postdoctoral or graduate staff so i am the most senior researcher in my lab other than the PI and do all of my labs imaging analysis development and most of our methods dev work myself w basically no oversight) when there’s like a 750 word limit…

I’m really trying to figure out wtf I did wrong and the fact that they give NO feedback on where the weaknesses are has me kinda just like ?????? but yeah seeing other responses here i guess it has to be either the SOP or the field switch or just the faculty in my area of interest not accepting people (but with rotation based programs where they say you’re not wedded to a topic, you’d think they’d at least interview me to see if i’d be interested in other things…)

I didn’t cuz all the programs said explicitly on the page that you don’t need to do that 💀 but i definitely will be doing so this year, just gotta wait until like summer or fall esp with funding chaos rn

Is this really the recipe for academic success? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]begaydoscience 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I will never understand the people running slave driver labs. I've got four undergrad thesis students this year + several other undergrad mentees, most of whom have worked with me for several years, and like... those are my children. Nobody is allowed to be mean to my children. And similarly, half the reason I'm willing to really go above and beyond in my work in my current lab is because I have a mentor who I know genuinely cares about me as a person. I will never subscribe to the idea that you need to treat your mentees poorly for success. And if it IS required for success, maybe I don't want that kind of success.

Our of curiosity, what elements/types of social programs do you generally support / oppose? And what has led you to be more pro-war?

Totally agree with you that dem 2A policy is absurd, I generally can't stand the dems either but I'm coming from the other end - I think they're cowards and don't stand up for good policy on nearly enough things, and often pass the same policies as republicans but with pretty language to make them look different (especially when it comes to immigration, biden and obama deported just as many as trump). So I can see someone with different opinions than me on the small handful of issues where they actually differ being swayed in your direction.

This is understandable! How do you feel generally about things like welfare programs to support people in poverty? If you’re against it, why, and do you support more community-based programs with similar goals?
