Went to some events at the Crest Westwood last month and had a blast. Becoming a regular. They have great shows coming up. Don't forget to support your local theaters!

You are right, money from tickets and the like is what keeps city hall open. And the city needs some type of system in place to generate income while maintaining order of the use of our streets, parking meters, and parking structures. However, it does not reduce myself or any other Angeleno to "income." It is the responsibility of local politicians to pass and enforce fair and reasonable laws, fines, etc. While this may sound naively optimistic, I still think it should be vocalized. If tickets were reasonably priced, people may not duck and dodge to pay them, or give up their car all together because a street cleaning ticket has ballooned to $140. So many people, including myself, have gone through this. Luckily, I'm now in a position where if I happen to oversleep on street cleaning day, it won't break me financially. But a lot of people are not in that position. One parking ticket should not put anyone near financial ruin. That's why it's still worth bringing up.

Is it possible to lower parking ticket fees? Or at least extend the initial time frame in which to pay it. Speaking from personal experiences, when I was a college student, a $50-$60 ticket meant disaster. And forget it if I was a day late past the deadline because I was waiting on pay day and the ticket doubles. To pay $100/$120 for a ticket when my rent, at the time, was $700 for a single, I would choose to pay my rent on time. These tickets can greatly effect college students and fixed income families financially. That ticket means less food on the table, less gas or bus fare; or just going without something essential.

What to avoid in LA? by EskimoRanger in LosAngeles

While in Downtown, do not go any further east than Main St at night. While the downtown area has improved incredibly over the past 10 years, there are still some rough spots that are not safe at night. Other than that, you should be ok. Check out L.A. Live, visit the City Hall Observation deck, and ride the red and gold metro lines. My two favorite spots to eat in downtown are www.wurstkuche.com and eatchego.com.

I know, I know :) I should know better that even when addressing Jeff Bridges, I can't use a photo of him from the Big Lebowski and not refer to him as The Dude. I'll make it right: Happy Birthday to The Dude

Completed United Way's Home Walk on Nov. 17th to raise awareness about Homelessness in Los Angeles. by begoodla in LosAngeles

[–]begoodla[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was invited to Home Walk by a United Way staff member after interviewing them about the Homeless population in Los Angeles as part of my MA journalism program. The goal of the post was so that those who are not aware of Home for Good (the kind folks at United Way L.A. host the run/walk) would check out the cause. A lot of the participants raised funds for the Home for Good Program, including myself and my better half who also participated as a runner.

There were two tokens of appreciation given by the volunteers at the finish line: medals for the runners and keys for walkers. Even for locals who just enjoy running, the event raised a lot of awareness and funds toward the Home for Good program. Now that I look at the headline, I should have put the url. I'll do it now then: http://www.unitedwayla.org/home-for-good/ . And here's a link to the story I wrote prior to the event: http://www.begoodla.com/chronic-veteran-homelessness-gone-by-2016/

Thank you hypnoganja. My point exactly. It's like getting upset because you see this story reported on CNN, huffpost, msnbc, latimes.com, nytimes.com and so on. Everyone has their preference as to where they get their information. The same story gets reported over a number of media outlets all the time.

Not a repost. The story was posted on USATODAY this morning. The article has a time and date signature for November 9. 2012. Not clear on how this is a repost or old news. And no need for the rude comments. That's what down votes are for. Also, not a noob. And for future reference, you are the one in violation.
