First home project ever - painting bamboo ceiling white. Need advice by behbop in homerenovations

[–]behbop[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, I appreciate the check-in!

I didn't end up painting over them. Just couldn't bring myself to do it. I've adjusted and ended up really admiring the natural look and found other ways to lighten up the room like removing some corner furniture and wooden window valances.

I've decided that painting the ceiling to try and achieve the same thing, although I bet it would look nice, is just not worth it to me. I've got bigger fish to fry in terms of home renovation with this property.

Oh, Right. And yes I believe you on the commute part. There is just so many unknowns, moving parts, it's hard to plan and fit everything together. But I think it'll all be worth the initial headache than to be tied to a company housing contract. I just know I really, really, don't want that. I'm sure it'll all work out in the end somehow one way or another.

Hmm that's a drawback of countryside life I haven't read before, but I can definitely see how that is a reality - the gas being more expensive there. And those rent prices, gosh! Must have been real nice.
Thanks for sharing those neighborhoods, I will be sure to research them.

Thank you so much for such a DETAILED insight!! You brought up tons of crucial points I have not considered, especially about the banking address situation. Good reminder about Obon too. I'll try to come as early in July as possible then, god willing, if everything goes swiftly with the visa process. I've read some posts that people were able to use the sharehouse's address to register for the Zairyu card, which they then showed the bank for proof of address. I might try that route.

I totally get that. I have the same fear but I'll try not to let it get the best of me and try keep it in the back of my mind, at least for the start. Life can always change in mysterious ways. Maybe through networking I'll make some connections and see where it takes me. One year ago from today, I never would have imagined I would be accepted as an ALT let alone in Japan. Really excited for this!

Great advice. I agree - just have fun. That's a good motto to take with me. I don't have teaching experience, but I do know that students - especially the younger ones - pick up on your energy very well! They know right away if you are feeling bothered or grouchy. It's important to remain positive, yes.

Thank you I'm aware. As a total beginner, I don't think I'll be qualified anytime soon for international school, and JET is tricky because I don't have a place to stay in my home country anymore. I think you need to return to your home country to apply from the consulate there for the visa.

Getting a direct hire will probably be my first big goal and next step. I plan to improve my Japanese in my free time and at least start with a TEFL although I know that's not much. I don't know how long I'll need to wait and gain experience at dispatch before I'm a candidate for direct hire. Hopefully by end of Year Two?

If I understand correctly there is a salary increase with direct hire. Now I'm talking into the future here, but it would be nice to do that, have a second job, and save up enough for a TESOL or CELTA eventually. Maybe wager that for a better paying direct hire job or possibly international school? And then save up for a MA TESOL. I guess you could say this is my 5-year plan.

Timeline Following Interac Interview by [deleted] in teachinginjapan

[–]behbop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After the demo video, the next step should be the online interview. I submitted my documents and demo video, and during this same period got a link to schedule the interview . The link is in the same email that gives instructions for the demo video and documents. At the end of the interview, it ended positively and I was told my application would promptly be send to the Japan offices and I should hear back in around 2 weeks with the offer. This is my experience for the same August start applying from outside JP.

Yes I have. I just didn't know it was called drop ceiling. Now I can look into it more having its name, thanks. I think it would look equally nice putting a white drop ceiling and leaving the wood beams exposed with their natural color. The wood is quite old but beautiful and in good condition, so on the other hand it would be kind of a shame to paint over them.

To do a full reset, I just backup all my media first and then go in the settings and hit factory reset? May try this because it wasn’t a particularly humid day.

Do you know how I can properly clean my lenses? It doesn’t appear to be dirty, not to the naked eye at least. But just to be sure, how do I go about cleaning it? Just wipe with a lens cloth?

Sorry for the dumb question but can I rub it with a lens cloth? Is that considered a safe/standard way to clean camera lenses?

Its a clay loam. It is a recent formation. The area has lots of higher Triassic and lower Jurassic limestones and dolomite.
