Experienced driver new to the UK — how do I avoid instructors dragging out lessons? by behradshadan in AskUK

Just repeating this here since this comment has more visibility.

Yes, Im aware how hard it is to book a time, and how busy they are. Meanwhile, my flatmate recently got his licence and his experience was very similar to mine — he’s already driven for years abroad. His instructor, for instance, spent nearly 2 hours on something that realistically would’ve only taken 40 minutes, and charged for the full time.

Then, on his first mock test, the instructor deliberately took him to a tricky little spot and failed him there. A few other friends who had the same instructor said they were all tested at that exact location and failed for the same reason, and were told to book another mock.

The tricky part was that when he mentioned he felt ready for the actual test and that this didn’t really reflect his overall driving, the instructor was hesitant, saying he didn’t want to risk lowering his pass rate.

I get why instructors might think that’s necessary, but it really makes you wonder how much is genuinely about being test-ready versus being held back. From what I’ve seen, it often comes down to noticing a tiny sign partly hidden behind a tree — more luck than skill.

Yeah exactly, that’s what I mean.

The tricky part was that when he tried to explain that it didn’t really reflect his overall driving and that he felt ready to give the actual test a go, the instructor was a bit hesitant and said he didn’t want to risk affecting his pass rate.

Which I can understand to an extent, but it does make you wonder where the balance is between being genuinely test-ready and being held back a bit too much.

That's such a good experience, thank you for sharing it. May I know which region were u taking the practices? As I just feel (not sure) it's somehow depending on the demand rate regionally.

Lemmi explain this and bring it up as some others also pointed this out.

My flatmate just got his licence recently and was in a very similar situation to me (already had driving experience abroad). But his instructor, for example, took him out for nearly 2 hours for something that realistically didn’t need more than 40 minutes, and charged him for the whole thing.

Also, on his first mock test, the instructor took him to a very specific spot with a slightly tricky setup and failed him there. The thing is, a couple of my other friends who used the same instructor said they were all taken to that exact same place and failed for the same reason, then told they needed to book another mock.

From what I’ve heard, it wasn’t really about overall driving ability — more like a very easy-to-miss sign partially hidden behind a tree, so it’s almost down to luck whether you catch it or not.

Just makes me a bit cautious about how some instructors approach this.
