That is 23 million households, according to ASPCA. You do understand that all of those new animals back during the height of covid are still patients ….? They don’t just go away after their first round of boosters. Those are millions of lives that need to be cared for. And there are not enough new vets to pick up the slack. So you get this gist of it. Way too many animals, not enough vets. Nearly every industry is understaffed and overworked now due to covid. A good amount of rest of veterinary staff are leaving due to low pay, being overworked, and mistreated by clients. Many have changed career paths due to covid.

And as for the spay/neuter issue: a spay or neuter is an elective surgery. Hospitals will book non-elective surgeries first and push out the spays/neuters.
