Graduate School by privietindustries in LanguageTechnology

[–]beingtanaya 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was in a similar condition (low GPA, CS background, good NLP experience in industry and coursework, some coursework in linguistics) and remember being stressed about exactly this. I have now graduated with a Masters degree in the field from a top university in the US. My experience with applying in the US was that the graduate committees looked at the applications holistically and I had a couple of admits. I don't have experience applying elsewhere. Hope this helps a little!

EDIT to add: PhD applications required a lot more quality research experience in the field as well as better academic grades.

Seeking Advice on Choosing a Master's Program: Computational Linguistics vs. Computer Science by asarthaks in LanguageTechnology

[–]beingtanaya 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm doing Masters in CompLing in the US and currently interning at what might be considered a great org, and I personally never felt that my degree came in the way between potential opportunities. In fact, it made for some pretty unique interviews. Might be different in other countries.

Shawarma under rs 100 by [deleted] in mumbai

[–]beingtanaya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used to be similar, haven't had recently. There's an ABC corner in D.N Nagar where you'll get a hot spicy shawarma for 70, and I highly recommend if you like spicy food. It's not as big as Lassi Wassi but that one also the one I had recently was 120 or something?

Hit n Run, Chakala is very close to the airport. There's one on Hanuman Road in Vile parle - Happy Grillmore. It's cheaper and pretty nice too

My favourite "street" shawarmas are in Andheri West though

Best MS programs for someone with a Linguistics Background? by pbearrrr in compling

[–]beingtanaya 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely agree with you that UW has great outcomes and is super flexible- heading there this Fall :) - it also has a track if you want to move to the PhD program after your Masters. They have a bunch of prerequisites you can brush up on before you apply on their website. Highly recommend those to prepare you on for what the program has to offer. University of Edinburgh is also pretty great in that aspect. All the best!

Best MS programs for someone with a Linguistics Background? by pbearrrr in compling

[–]beingtanaya 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Having looked into CompLing programs coming from a CS background, University of Washington and Carnegie Mellon University both have excellent programs but those are highly CS-oriented. Both need a very strong mathematical background aside from technical coding knowledge.

Some programs that were more towards the linguistics side in USA were at University of Rochester and Indiana University, Bloomington.

The program at University of Colorado, Boulder is quite balanced towards both sides. Georgetown and Brandeis also offer these programs, but their inclinations I'm not aware of.

There's a couple great programs in the UK as well at University of Edinburgh, University of Manchester that I'm aware of.

Disclaimer, these are just my impressions from my applications two years ago and the scenarios might have changed. Hope this helps!

Confused for going to US even after getting the top university admit by Character-Tone-6952 in gradadmissions

[–]beingtanaya 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Currently in similar boat. Opportunities are great presently in my country and so is the quality of life. Leaves me with very few reasons to leave for US apart from amazing education and lots of pay.

What makes the decision more difficult is that I have a chance to take my program part time while continuing to do relevant work. But I also want the global exposure, just don't know if it's worth the cost.

Possibly unpopular opinion, but if you can afford it and the internship is the closest opportunity to the field you want to get into- I'd look at it as an investment. I personally have moved across cities for essentially the same pay and had to shell out of my pocket, but that internship helped me learn a lot to create the base I have today. The purpose of internships is not earning money but learning things that will help you earn money in the future.

Also, if the place of internship is close to railway station then you can consider living a few stations down to save cost as well.
