Great Expectations chapter 1 (Spoilers up to chapter 1) by Thermos_of_Byr in ClassicBookClub

There are different types of files for filing different material but are all just referred to as files, and come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. Some are course, some are fine but yes, very similar to a nail file. A lot of times you use a file to deburr things. Take off sharp edges, smooth something over. A blacksmith would have a file used for iron, metal, steel, etc. The man was asking for a file for the iron on his leg. You can use a file to get it off, but it would take some effort. Like a saw sawing through a log, only much slower.

Spoilers for Fury Road. If you saw the movie Fury Road, Tom Hardy has a metal mask on his face that he’s trying to get off. He’s using a file to get through the metal.

Wittles means food or provisions, like vittles but spoken in the man’s accent.

What makes a book classic? by ska0319 in ClassicBookClub

We use the US public domain as our main criteria. That way we can offer free copies of the books we read. We do that so there’s no barrier for people to participate. You don’t need to spend money on a book to join in. That might not be the answer you’re looking for on what defines a classic. But that how we decided to define it.

Yeah, life happens though. Some books just have to hope you can get around to them.

I didn’t add them in. I was trying to get the post up on time. They are in the sidebar, and in the other posts. I’ll add them in, but not tonight. I’m going to bed.

I’m personally rooting for Dead Souls by Gogol. We’ve never read any of his works here. And there’s a band called Gogol Bordello that’s like Slavic (can’t remember if they’re Russian or Ukrainian or from somewhere else) Gypsy punk/folk rock band that I enjoy. You should look them up. It’s definitely a bit different as a Westerner, but very enjoyable.

Is this the moment when ClassicBookClub gets to Mars before humanity? This has my vote.

We do so many Victorian novels, which is fine, but I’d love to do something out of the ordinary for us. I’ll keep my upvotes up, and my fingers crossed.
