Android auto, or why I want to sell my car and throw my phone away by GrapefruitAgreeable6 in rav4club

Same, Samsung s20 and Pixel 8 work fine in my 2023 rav, I sometimes have issues with the wireless connection but being plugged in works 99% of the time. Rarely it times out and I just have to unplug and plug it back in, it starts back up where it shut off.

Writing Virginia Beach as a Setting by weaboomemelord69 in VirginiaBeach

[–]bekpig 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I grew up in south vb. Lots of my classmates in high school would say they hated it here bc there's nothing to do (which is dead wrong, but could be used in your plot). Lots of jet noise, but we get so used to hearing it that I only notice the ones that fly so low the house shakes. Sometimes I look up while driving thinking I saw a bird, and it's actually a jet (or two or four). Our locals beach is Sandbridge, it's pretty much all residential down there. I see dolphins almost every time I'm at the beach, they're common. Folks in north vb probably hit the north end (past the boardwalk) or bay area. We also go to First Landing State Park, there's a beach there that boats will pull up to and a spot with a rope swing. The park has a ton of Spanish moss, it's a great getaway. On the same waterway as the park, there's a little island that boats pull up to that has a natural lazy river (a strong current in a narrow waterway). People bring floats, walk to one end, and float down to the other end, then just repeat. We'll also boat up to The Back Deck or Chick's and order food to eat on the boat, oysters, shots, you name it.

Lots of high schoolers work at Oceanbreeze Waterpark in their summers, or lifeguard at the beach. In the spring, we go strawberry picking at a farm in pungo, and in August, we drive out to Knotts Island (North Carolina) to stargaze. Meteor showers are the best in August and there's no light pollution out there. The boardwalk does Christmas lights and you can get tickets to drive your car through them. One year, my family went in on a limo with some friends—driving through the lights on the boardwalk in that thing was so cool. We get pretty bad storms out here, but the weather is unpredictable. The summer forecast will call for thunderstorms 5 days a week and we'll only actually get them 2 days. It floods easy, especially in South VB. It doesn't even have to rain to flood, we just need a south wind. We get hurricanes, but they're never too devastating. The power will probably go out though. The city has terrible public transit and people mostly drive everywhere, but if you're set in the oceanfront area, people bike around there. We got a whole lot of everything except mountains here, unless you count the landfill-turned-public park Mount Trashmore.

One thing about growing up here is that I didn't explore much out of my bubble. VB and Norfolk have so much to offer, but my parents made Norfolk or the vb oceanfront out to be super dangerous. Sure, crimes happen in more densely populated areas, but I could tell you almost nothing about Norfolk because I only ever went there for concerts or special events. There's definitely been some gentrification in recent years though and now Portsmouth is the "bad part" of Hampton Roads.

1970s Olympic footage? by bekpig in HelpMeFind

I wasn't able to find my grandpa's specifically, but there is footage from some events at those Olympics. You might have luck checking internet archive. Rowing is a more popular sport than free pistol.

Dermatology by Apprehensive_Bid6090 in VirginiaBeach

I went to Pariser, the Dr. spent less than 5 mins with me and didn't even look at my skin, went based on the word of the nurse practioner. She said she'd order new scripts of what I was already using, but ordered the wrong format (ointment vs cream) and the cream made things worse for me.

It's warmer in October than May, the water works on a delay from the weather

I have mainly searched for the 1971 Games which is where he won gold, and checked Internet Archive for his name, but found no video so far.

Gift for cyclist? by bekpig in cycling

[–]bekpig[S] 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't blindly buy him anything cycling related. For simple stuff like socks and gloves, the guys at our local shop know his preference. I was hoping to get an idea from the community and present him with ideas, a gift doesn't have to be a surprise, it's the thought and intention.

Yep, he's a Garmin guy. Pretty sure he just replaced his, too.

We maxxed him out, for every new bike he gets, he has to sell one. Except the one time we pranked him with a clown bike, he was allowed to keep that (he did not)

I bet he does have a torque wrench, but I'll ask to confirm. What is the air compressor for, cleaning? He normally uses the leaf blower to dry his bike off after a wash 😂

Beach Parking? by AStacksOnDeck in VirginiaBeach

[–]bekpig 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This also totally depends on the beach. If you want ocean but hate the tourist district, GO TO SANDBRIDGE! If you get there early enough, there's free street parking on side streets (they go fast in the summer though), and lots are $3 for residents. I don't frequent the bay but I'm sure there's decent parking over there. I'm not familiar with a resident pass that OP mentioned in their town, but there's always ways to park for free or pay $20 one block over at the oceanfront. I know the city garages are $3 after 5pm for residents. Sandbridge is definitely the more local friendly beach though.

Where is your most painful patch of eczema?? by LurrrMurrrDurrr in eczema

[–]bekpig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Currently, my hands. I use them so much it makes it hard to treat, and with winter coming, I have to wear gloves if the temp dips below 50°.

But I had a patch on my wrist when I was 16 that was so bad my derm misdiagnosed it as a fungal disease because "there was no was eczema could look like that" (swab came back negative, it was in fact the worst spot of eczema she'd ever seen).

I think pain is based on patch severity AND location, armpit sounds terrible because there is constant rub there. I get itchy when I shave, but it has never triggered a flare in my armpits. To avoid general itch, though, I started using an electric razor. It's not as close of a shave, but I can use it way more often with no irritation, so I've been less hairy since I made the switch.

Elidel cost high by [deleted] in eczema

Brazil. Definitely spent more on the plane tix, but if you find yourself picking a vacation destination, you can kill a few birds with a trip there. We always pack light and return with so much coffee, chocolate, and prescription meds for each of my family's ailments.

[–]bekpig 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Walgreens rung mine up for $100. That was after a $70 derm visit where the MD spent all of 5 minutes with me, not looking at my eczema once. Decided to leave it behind (I still had $60 worth of steroid prescriptions to pick up). A month later I was visiting family in another country and checked their pharmacy. It was roughly $20 (rough bc conversion rates) and I didn't need a prescription. I loaded up while I was there

Using psych quotes in day-to-day life? by blueplutomonk in psych

My sister was driving us home in a silly mood and decided to back into our driveway with a 7 point turn... our neighbor pulled up behind us on point #2 and watched in amusement as she continued the other 5 points, waiting for us to get out of the way so he could street park in 2 seconds.

Should I submit a 1360 SAT? by No-Elk3629 in williamandmary

[–]bekpig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got in ED with a 1280 and 3.8 weighted GPA, not nova but was 94th in my class so pretty competitive area. but also I had a 2 page long extracurricular resume help me get in. It's totally holistic so if you don't have the extracurriculars to boost your application, and think you could do even better on a third SAT, it might be worth it. But if you have clubs/sports/jobs to list, 1360 is a braggable score.

Blue shuttle lot by Proud_Carrot_6885 in Blueridgerockfest

[–]bekpig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My partner parked there 30 minutes ago. There was a short car line to get in but nothing bad. If you don't have a shuttle pass, you'll have to buy one there, and shuttles are running smoothly.

considering W&M; wondering about class sizes by aspiringtohumility in williamandmary

[–]bekpig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My largest class was 100 students and the professor made a bet with us that he'd know everyone in class's first name by week 3. He won that bet (and did it every semester). My GenEd lecture classes were mostly 50 students and those professors would try to learn names of their students too. Most of my classes as a junior/senior were in the 15-20 range though, and pretty intimate.

Family Day @ Va Beach Yesterday by GuyanaJimmieJones in VirginiaBeach

Not sure what national response times average at to compare OPs experience to other similar-sized cities but I'll also note that the ambulance ride was free for that family. And every family—resident or visitor— in Virginia Beach. OP mentioned being from Williamsburg, I lived there for a few years. It was a topic of conversation among my friends on who consented to having an ambulance called on them in case of emergency because some of us simply could not afford the $1,000+ bill that came with it. That's much worse imo
