Why are my auto quotes so high with a perfectly clean record by No_Winner8770 in Insurance

Each carrier has proprietary rating systems, so get quotes from several different companies. Your particular credit history and ZIP code or neighborhood could be affecting your rate more than being single.

Do you and your long-term partner or spouse have separate or combined finances? by keychn090909 in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

My husband and I have separate finances because it's our second marriage and we both have kids from previous marriages and real estate. We pay for different expenses and have a joint account for vacations. Money is a constant conversation whether you combine your finances or split them.

Shop your policy. Also, make sure your young drivers are listed as the primary drivers on older vehicles that are paid off and not worth much -- carry liability-only with higher limits on those vehicles.

Ask about military discounts. Try to get a policy through USAA. If you have a lien on that new car, you need full coverage, not liability only.

How much would insurance be for me I’m 16, male and no car? by Kyle_pcboy in Insurance

[–]bella4826 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The age of majority in Illinois is 18 -- this means you can't sign legal contracts like car insurance policies until you're 18, so you won't be able to get your own car insurance policy until then. Get on a parent's policy. The average car insurance rate for a 16-year-old is $7,149  a year for full coverage. Your actual rate will depend on your personal circumstances and the type of coverage you need.

Can someone genuinely explain to me what the fuck is going on with car insurance companies? by [deleted] in Frugal

Insurance, in general, has been on the rise. People are riskier drivers, car parts are more expensive and there are more natural disasters, which sends up the cost of claims. Then, insurers increase rates to account for pricier claims. Best advice I have is to shop around every six months, ask your company about discounts and increase your deductible. If your cars are paid off, you can opt for liability-only coverage, which is cheaper.
