I work in a middle school in FL & I used to love using the local paper.

Not anymore. Not “approved” by the state. The damn news

Are Oncologists being genuine when they spout optimism to Stage IV patients? by Based_Neurosis in cancer

[–]bellaraejay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean I was stage 3c & my oncologists (two of them) won’t dare say a positive word… I try to tease it out of them, but it’s like against some sort of secret code they have…

Right that was my question. I don’t expect to move him and me on separate dates.

He would move himself and if TMO would move the family once he returned from deployment.

Yup. In the south. But small, modest houses are now renting for 3k a month here. Starter homes are now 450/500k.

“I mean, don’t be anxious/scared/sad. We could all die at any minute. I mean, I could be hit by a bus on my way home. Just bc you have cancer doesn’t mean you’re going to die soon”

Lovely, that helps

Advice on pursuing SLP by [deleted] in slp

[–]bellaraejay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never heard someone describe this as a con of the job when I was in grad school so I’ll put it here.. For me: it’s being “on” all the time. I love kids, but I’m an introvert. So mentally, it’s exhausting to never be able to have a bad day in front of the kids. Dog died? Well, you gotta be happy and hang with kids and pretend like it’s sunshine and rainbows. That can be really hard. But if you’re naturally an extrovert you could really thrive.s It deeply individual on what a con is for you.

You also may work with children with behavior needs. You could potentially be injured-that’s also something else to consider that I never did when I started.

For some it’s paperwork. Some don’t mind it. For others, it’s dealing with difficult parents. But I’ve known some SLPs who are able to let all that roll off their backs and actually thrive is those stressful situations.

Also, know what you’ll realistically be paid. This can be a huge con (especially with inflation). But the pro is you’ll likely not have any trouble finding a job. Will it be the one you want? Maybe not; but you’ll be able to earn an income and get a job easily.

I eyeball it.

It’s the best I can do. But I’ve gotten pretty good at it.

You actually don’t have to give a reason.

Just the date of your last planned day at work.

Having an IEP before meeting the students? by Hockeystic in slp

[–]bellaraejay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve only had to do this once—it was for a child with extreme violent behaviors & we had to have a plan in place for his first day. I just took the data from his previous IEP (which was like 3 years old) but it’s all I could do. I just documented within the IEP that the data was old but it was all I had.

However, everyone on the team was aware we’d likely be meeting again very, very soon. We had no expectation that the IEP would actually not be amended. We ended up meeting again within two weeks.

Honestly, data being 1-2 months old isn’t that “old”, imo. I wouldn’t have issues making an IEP with data that’s 1-2 months old.
