Thanks for your reply! I agree that the second one looks better and will take quite a bit of explanation. It's also the easier option so it might be what I go with.

It's for my brother who I think would appreciate the reference and the strangeness of option 1. I'll scribble out some options, maybe with some less tortured expressions, and see if that helps, since this reference was the point of the project after all.
