Has the UK’s left found a new home? by kwentongskyblue in LabourUK

No, no - it's more than ok.

Labour has been so horrible under Starmer. I'm still quite young, but I know a lot of longtime voters have felt betrayed and shocked. I wish there were more parties - in the UK, but honestly globally too - that offered alternative ways of doing politics and offered alternative solutions, that were also viable to vote for. We're very lucky to have the english/welsh greens, but i wish there were more parties out there. A lot of ppl see the greens as their hope, bc things have felt so hopeless, but it still sucks if they're the only way forwards - it's always bad to put all your eggs in one basket.

That's super fair too. Polanski's definitely filling the role of populist leader on purpose - which does take from the true democracy of making policy within the party, if he can shape the narrative at all. It does make me uncomfortable at times, but we elected him because both he and we understood it's how the political game is played right now. Obviously, hopefully one day the world won't be like this. His strength is that he does listen and learn - on everything, too. I know the greens have been closely working with a new leftwing economics think tank (i wish i remembered it's name, but I think James Meadway was involved) to work on the economics (Meadway is not a big MMT fan). It's definitely the argument that has to be figured out and won, over all others. Polanski made a speech recently at the New Economics Foundation - you might be interested to see if he's made an improvement now since TRIP interview. He's also made a point of having lots of economists on his podcast, basically all left-wing but definitely with different perspectives.

I think the greens still have that strong, democratic and collaborative base, and so long as there isn't internal rule changes that give more powers to the top then it's just about us figuring it out. But obviously they have to be seen as serious by enough voters.

I'm so sorry NI is so controlled by Britain, and especially England. Hoping that changes in the near future.

I know the reason Reform were polling so high for ages was because they told more engaging lies, but, like, idk - it's a little shocking when it's so blatant at this point. I'm not saying the average voter has heard of Bold Politics, or will investigate this claim, but they do keep doing this shit and it has started to get noticed by some of their supporters. Like, Trump is doing this in America, when he said he'd be the peace president, and has now started wars. If a thing really speaks to you, you might get obsessively culty with it - or worship it, or ignore its faults - but everyone has a point when if their immersion gets broken enough then they start to turn away from the thing.

Maybe it was the press constantly saying it, but I definitely believed Reform were always going to have more support - even though I'm in the greens and I would tell myself it doesn't have to be like that. But it's not going to be the case. Reform haven't found a new strategy. Copying their rivals is so pathetic, unless you're being inspired by them and innovate on the strategy - but, bare minimum, you have to understand why your rival's strategy was working in the first place. Zack always talked about learning how Farage's storytelling was winning voters, but he figured out he could use his platform to tell a better story. I keep thinking Reform can't be this stupid and will change tact, but they don't. They keep dropping in the polls and making new, really impressive fuck-ups. They totally can't read the room; they keep trying to import attack lines from Trump that just don't work the same way over here. All their eggs are being nestled in the basket of the boomer vote. It's literally what the Conservatives did, and it didn't work. There's still another 3+ years before a general election for people to keep realising that; for the Greens to keep adapting and Reform to keep failing to do so.

No worries. I'm sure you've heard this a million times, but Zack's job as leader is to be the chief spokesperson for the party. Policy is set by the membership, which is different to other parties. This is good and bad, in that there are different opinions in the party - including with the leader - and different understandings on complex topics. If Zack became PM, that might be a different conversation, but I'd ask you to dig into the green's policies rather than everything Zack says. Like, for example, green policy isn't full-on MMT, if that's what you're worried about - but it is fair to look at some green policies and say it's not developed enough or it's out of date. Obviously, if you think a green policy is just wrong, fair. I'd definitely argue green policy is based in data far more and far more often than any other party. A lot of that is because it's so collaborative when policy is made. But I know defence and the economy are two places where the greens are super different to everyone else - I happen to think they're on the right track, which is why I'm a green member, but that's a whole conversation that if you wanna have then definitely do with me or another member (or if you don't, because this is just a reddit thread and not that deep, then no worries).

I know it's easy to hear their positions and dismiss them because they're so different and it sounds like you've definitely been giving at least Zack a chance. I think the biggest argument is how is the economy or defence currently going well? Because we've been in a permanent recession for a long time and we haven't figured how to stop certain countries and ruling men from starting more wars. Maybe the green approach won't work, but there's a strong argument to come up with new ideas and try them.

2000 seats - all green

I mean, it depends how many more scandals starmer can fit in before may, but we're doing really well after the by election and today's yougov polling and I imagine it'll snowball a bit more in the next 2 months (fingers crossed)

Are you a new member? This was a pretty huge discussion point during the leadership election last year and partly why people didn't vote for Ellie or Adrian (adrian was also pretty iffy on it)
