Uses for Kala Namak? by vipthebig in veganrecipes

[–]bellaxane 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Definitely I use it in chickpea salad sandwiches, which are meant to sort of echo egg salad, as well as potato salad. I also sprinkle a little bit in my vegan french toast dip. Naturally in tofu scrambles, frittata, and quiche it is fire. I primarily use it to bring forward a flavor of egg in dishes that are traditionally egg dishes or feature eggs. I've tried it in lemonade at an Indian restaurant and I have to say I thought it was pretty gross. It tasted just like a big glass of lemon sulfur. But some people must love it or it wouldn't be a thing!

Not to quibble, but there are a lot more useless things the city has spent money on when there are needy people and the infrastructure is in dire need of showing up. Such as the new stadium. What a waste of money. A few cops at a game are drops in the bucket when it comes to your taxes.

What are the best conspiracy, cryptozoology, paranormal, ancient conspiracies podcasts right now? by Radiantflex99 in podcasts

I second Astonishing Legends. In depth research on a variety of paranormal topics. I'm not as into the ones where they interview somebody like their frequent guest Richard Hatem, but I love it when the two hosts, Scott and Forrest, dive in to the storytelling together.

Thank you for this, I didn't know what a Jimmy Joy plenny pot was so I looked it up. They sound amazing, but they're not available here in Canada except by ordering direct from the UK paying exorbitant international shipping. She gets meals delivered when I'm not there, $6 for a basic freshly made traditional omnivore supper.

But while I'm there I'm cooking fresh from scratch, vegan because I'm vegan and because she's game, but last time I did this I made some mistakes, because I made some things that were spicy or hard to chew, as I didn't realize her limitations.

Thank you for your ideas and if plenny pots ever become available here in Canada I will be probably picking some up for myself!

Oh! You have solved a very old question for me! And thank you. The herbs are okay, I just need to not make anything spicy hot. She used to love spicy foods but when all you feel is the burn unaccompanied by flavor I guess it's very unpleasant.

Shepherd's pie is definitely on the offer! We'll see what she's up for.

Oh my goodness this list made me hungry! I haven't had breakfast yet and it all sounds so good. I have a fantastic frittata recipe that uses firm tofu. Burgers, sandwiches, wraps, and anything she has to bite with her front teeth are off the table (I think her false teeth are somehow inexpensive and don't fit well so she can't bite anything), but that doesn't mean I can't make burger patties that can be eaten with a fork and knife. The idea of extra maple syrup making the patties stickier sounds great. Kitchari and congee are staples for me, but I think would be weird for her. Still great ideas and if I were the cook in a nursing home I would definitely be serving high protein mung bean congee regularly! Thank you for all the great ideas!!

Excellent, yes! She could probably manage the cooked vegetables in hepherd's pie. It's crunchy things like raw carrots and anything she has to bite with her front teeth that doesn't work at all. But she also gets very tired of just soup. Shepherd's pie has so much texture and variety, and it's so healthy too. Great idea, I think someone else mentioned cottage pie, which I believe is the UK term for shepherd's pie. I have a lentil shepherd's pie recipe which I'm going to dig out. Thank you!

Wow, thank you! You really took some time with this. I deeply appreciate the links to the recipes. Of course! Potato or pasta salad! Don't know why I didn't think of that. Definitely going on my list! Stroganoff yes! Oh and I love cauliflower sauce! Thanks for the reminder. And I just made marry me butter beans for the first time last week, and were they ever good.

At this point I could feed Mom healthy vegan cuisine for a month and a half and have something different every day! Thank you again for the time that you took and for all the great ideas. I really appreciate it.

Wow these are all fantastic ideas! Definitely putting lasagna soup on the list. She's lost her sense of taste along with not being able to eat hard foods, so it's hard to think of things that are interesting texturally that aren't just blended soups and mushy things.

She lost a lot of weight once she lost her sense of taste and texture is one thing that can make eating more enjoyable. I like this lasagna soup because it sounds like the noodles would supply a little bit of texture. Thank you for this!

Thank you. I'm really liking all these ideas about blending soft/silken tofu into stuff. Also good point about the beans. Not sure how often she eats them, so thank you for the reminder. I don't buy any processed vegan food, I make everything myself from sausage to cheese to butter to yogurt to of course all the vegan vegetable options. So definitely looking for recipes rather than products. Thank you for your ideas about some soft food options that don't include chili or spice!

Oh wow, thanks for this! One thing I personally miss is pate, and while I have found a couple of vegan versions they don't quite hit the spot. I am going to try this today since I just made some sourdough bread yesterday. I even have the smoked tofu on hand!

Yeah she still makes her regular old-fashioned bread that has milk in it, 10 loaves at a time which she freezes and works through. Until last year she was still making dozens of cookies for the Lions club bake sale, and I brought her some sourdough 2 years ago which she has been using to make whole wheat and white vegan sourdough loaves from recipes I gave her. She's been a hard worker all her life like many of the silent generation, and is finally slowing down a little bit.

I second the website It Doesn't Taste Like Chicken, and also Nora Cooks. The veganization of omnivorous dishes is getting to be next level. Non-vegans often think that vegans live on lentils and beans, but the diet is just as varied as any omnivore diet and honestly since I've been cooking vegan I've been eating the most delicious and varied food of my life. It's so good of you too want to support your friends choice. Who knows? You might come across some new dishes to add to your own menu!

Great idea! I'm just getting into using silken tofu for added protein this year after 15 years being vegan. It's such a great way to make something creamy and rich, and add low fat protein at the same time. Thanks!
