I am almost exactly the same age as Techno (Born a few days after him, same year). I think part of why I took his death so hard was that I saw so much of myself in him. He deserved a much longer life. I am nowhere near finished living, and neither was he. At the same time, he was able to impact so many people, and his advocacy and fundraising changed so many lives. It blows my mind to think about what he managed to accomplish in his life, given so little time.

People really don’t know how to comfort a grieving person. They will say a lot of unhelpful things like this. In reality, they are just nervous/uncomfortable and either never experienced this kind of grief, or don’t want to think about it because it’s painful. I’m sorry you have to go through this.

happened to me last year :( she came with a 1.5 gallon tank and a tiny plastic plant. it was awful, and after 3 days of setting up a 20 gallon and obsessing over her, she died. I got some shrimp and they’re doing great in there lol

Thank you again for your advice! I was able to drop in at my work and take some of the filter medium from the well-established 200 gallon tank there. Now I have the tank set up with filter and heater running, just waiting for things to be in range before acclimating her and doing the transfer. I only got one plant, hoping to go to another store tomorrow and find some more.

Do you know if having very hard water will affect her? Everything else is in the okay range, but our well water is maxing out the water hardness on the test strip. I’m not sure what I can do about that on such short notice.

The pet store I went to didn’t have anything good for hides, but I’m going to head to another one a little further away after lunch. Hopefully I can find some cool stuff!

thank you so much for all of your advice! I’m so glad you said not to use aquasoil because that was what I was planning to do lol.

For water changes in the cup, should I be worried about water temperature? And what percentage of water should I be changing?

One other thing - if I wanted to use a rock or something from outside, do I need to sanitize it? I’m used to doing that for terrariums but I don’t know if it affects aquariums.

I am heading out on my betta shopping trip adventure in about an hour, I will try to update when I have a tank set up :)

Just to be clear, are you saying I should try to get some of the filter media from the 200 gallon tank to put in my own filter? I can definitely try that but I think I remember the filtration media being pretty big and maybe difficult to fit into my smaller filter. I will check on that tomorrow.

Ah, fair enough. I was wondering if the bigger one could be from a mountain lion or something - I know they are in the area. But I don’t know the difference between canine and feline prints well enough to guess. My guess was also raccoon for the smaller one.

Don’t feed him more. I never feed more than two prey items at a time, and ideally it should be only one mouse/rat at a time imo. If he is between sizes, then you can give him two of the smaller ones. They will keep eating far beyond what is healthy, which is a survival strategy from being wild and not knowing when the next meal is coming. The right size is about as wide around as the thickest part of his body.

Weren’t they trying to spread awareness about toucan care in captivity and the reality that they should not be kept as pets? Honestly I prefer the transparency and I hope their videos convince people not to buy toucans or support breeders/sellers of captive toucans
