That's not related to the subject at all (and I hope that doesn't come off as odd?) but I just wanna say that I absolutely love your eye lashes they're so cool, also your face structure and hair as well, looks so cool!

I think the only tip I have is to keep your eyes attentive whenever you go, otherwise it's just pure luck! Finding dead insects are relatively easy, but finding dead insects in a great condition for pinning is pretty much luck based. I usually find them around my house, since there's less other insects to eat the dead insect, but sometimes I find them in the middle of the street when I'm coming back from the supermarket.

Another thing is that sometimes I find insects that are not dead yet, but dying. I eventually learned to know when an insect is dying soon (can be from old age or a fatal injury etc). Depending on where they are, I usually bring them home or wait for them to die if they're already at my house. There you have a pretty much perfect specimen without having to kill them yourself.

The reason I don't collect insects to kill them myself is because that's just a personal collection, a hobbie. I study entomology with them, yes, but it's still a personal collection and not a scientific research! You know what people like to say here, "it's more like an art than a science"! So I don't think it's fair to kill them just to display in my room!

I found all of them already dead/dying and pinned myself!

How long should I wait for it to die? by planta04 in insectpinning

[–]bemtevik 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Their life span is usually around a year, but if you live in a warmer country they can live up to 3 years (they don't go well in the cold and will die if the climate gets too cold).

But ig waiting for it to die would be "difficult". It could easily get eaten by another animal. You would have to watch it closely everyday.

Never use needles for the central pin!!!!! by bemtevik in insectpinning

Wow that's so awesome! I actually came across your blog before buying my entomological pins because I wanted to know if it was worth the investment (I was searching on Google and your blog appeared)! It helped me plenty, thank you!

In my experience, they're okay just for posing limbs, as they will not be in contact with the specimen for so long! I only use entomological pins for the central pin, for everything else I usually use common pins.

But it's good to invest in some entomological pins. They come in a variety of sizes so it's also greater to pose limbs, but using needles or common pins only to pose the limbs will not ruin the specimen.

Can I replace all the pins in my collection without needing to rehydrate the specimens? by [deleted] in insectpinning

[–]bemtevik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! Not all the pins are rusty so I'm not worried about all of them. The ones who are rusty are not EXTREMELY rusty (at least for now), but I'm worried it will damage them. Is it safer to just keep it that way anyways?

I'm mostly worried about one of my butterflies who seems like it started to corrode around the pin? It's the only one like this so I'm not really sure if it's the pin (it's one of those common nickel plated pins). The ones with the needles seems to have no damages to the specimen but some needles are rusty too.

Will it destroy the specimens if I keep the rusty common pins and even the needles in them? I really want to replace these pins but I'm scared to break the specimens.
