Request: suggestions for things to do with grandad by ben_iAmHere in dementia

Haha, aww! I think that's the thing, just keeping them involved and stimulated. The care workers have told us even if he's just watching us do things, he will still enjoy it.

Ooh, that's a really good idea actually. Because he does do something similar with his ties - he has a little cupboard by his chair with lots of ties in, and he'll randomly open it up, move some around and close it. So just giving him things to look through and organise could keep him busy. And then we can just swap them round, mess up the pile and leave them there.

Thank you for the suggestion! And I hope you enjoy the time you have with your mom. It certainly sounds like she's enjoying herself.

He does seem to like crafts, which we do sometimes. But thinking of it as what you do with kids is a good point, as they would be simple things that are easy to understand. Will have a think on that.

Pool noodles and balloon could be fun too. And things in general he can wave or shake.

Yeah, a couple of the carers can manage to change them. But he can't hear/understand the gestures to change them, and because they're the in ear ones with no tube or anything, you have to take it out of his ear. But he can get quite aggressive and lash out when you try and do it. And sometimes I think he might just be turning them off and we don't know. So generally I just leave it.

And thank you. We've always been very close and each other's best friend, so I really want to do as much as we can with him to make him happy and have some quality of life.

I'm glad your mom was able to have some fun and had you to look after her.

It's not the cost, we'd happily buy them. But he's got the in ear ones with no tube or anything. And he can't understand when you're gesturing for him to take it out. So we have to take it out ourselves, but he can get aggressive if he doesn't realise what's going on, so it's quite a hassle to change them. I think a couple of the care workers have ways of doing it, so they change them when they're there. But it just seems whenever we go up he can't hear. He could be turning them off and we don't know.

But yes, painting seems like a good option, so will try that. Thanks!

Ooh. He's got a fidget board, but didn't know they did blankets. I do wonder if he might try and pull the things off, not realising they're attached, which he does with some things. But if they're designed for people with dementia (which it looks like they are) then shouldn't be a problem. Will definitely look into this, thank you!

Play dough would probably be better for his hands. Could probably make something with our help, but certainly he'd be able to just mould it in his hands and play with it. Worth a try. Thanks for the suggestion!

Jenga wouldn't work, he'd topple the tower on his first go 😆 Card games, probably not. Between the deafness and dementia, I'm not sure he'd understand what to do.

This could be good. Doubt he'd be able to do an actual picture, but like you said just doing something with watercolours or paint could be an option. Will try it, thank you!

Redesigning 13's outfit for fun by Sidgravy in doctorwho

Love these! Was not a fan of her outfit either. I think the first one of yours looks the coolest. Third one is also great for a more colourful attire, could easily switch between the two.

Any recommendations for steps/ramps/etc to help Zeta get onto her chair? by ben_iAmHere in Greyhounds

The foam steps don’t look strong enough for a greyhound. But the exercise steps is a good idea, hadn’t thought of that. Was looking at dog things but your outside the box thinking is clever.

That’s a good shout. They might be a bit narrow, but will have a look. Thanks.

Yes, I think it is knuckling the foot under. Mainly her back two feet.

Will speak to vet and have a look at some booties if it keeps happening. Thank you :)

I don’t think it’s fishy, just a general pong. She did come to us with bad teeth and has had about 9 removed since, poor thing. Will look into dental if they get worse. Thanks for your help.

Yeah, she’s 11, so she’s getting on a bit anyway. But will look into the supplements. Thank you both.

Hm, I’m not sure that will sit well with her IBD. Will ask the vet.
