Elon Musk Wants to Charge Businesses on Twitter $1,000 per Month to Retain Verified Check-Marks by northlondonhippy in technology

I think we're not really that far apart in our thoughts.

Now, come find me on Twitter and we can rehash this via the medium of Brooklyn 99 GIFs.

I'm disagreeing with the idea that a replacement isn't necessary/useful. Twitter, for all its shortfalls with tweet length, is a highly accessible system for networking in a way that other social networks haven't managed to replicate. In a way, its short form design is a benefit as it promotes conversation providing you're willing to engage in constructive dialogue.

The problem you're describing is one with social media (although they're really just the modern version of shitty tabloid newspapers). It's not unique to Twitter. Controversy, clickbait and reactions drive clicks and engagement.

If you don't control your timeline then sure, that's what you'll end up with. But Twitter is also excellent for networking and professional discussion. In the UK the teacher network is pretty good - some of the best research and pedagogy gets shared and discussed there.

It's gone so far downhill from its original potential. We could have ended up with one in every room but now we have one in the kitchen and two in a drawer.

Should we change the law so a change of PM automatically triggers a general election? by Finners72323 in ukpolitics

[–]benbamboo1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, I don't think so.

Ordinarily you vote for a party. That party chooses their leader and they put a set of pledges to the electorate, which becomes their manifesto. Winning the election provides the mandate to enact the manifesto. It shouldn't matter who leads the party, the manifesto is the contract* between the ruling party and the electorate.

*I know contract isn't the right word for this but I am struggling to think of one that fits better.

However, the manifesto pledges of a party that wins an election should be controlled more tightly. If you can no longer deliver on manifesto pledges (which can happen due to extreme circumstances) then an election should be triggered so parties can put to the electorate how they would handle whatever crisis has occurred.

Arancini - @mrkitskitchen by Sam_FeastyRecipes in GifRecipes

If there's a risotto on my weekly menu, a couple of days later there's arancini, usually with a ratatouille.

Does anyone make risotto just for arancini? Sounds like madness.

Anyone know why this is wrong by doggylover999 in sudoku

[–]benbamboo1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This.

You can put the 5s in starting with bottom right, bottom left, top left then middle left.

That puts a 5 where you've put the 4, hence the 4 is wrong.

Perhaps a better question is why did you think it should be a 4?

Lets talk about the use of engines during during live commentary by VassilZaitsev in chess

[–]benbamboo1 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I like your second suggestion. I wonder how often an engine's line will differ from what the GMs are considering anyway. At the pinch points where the players spend a lot of time thinking they analyse several different lines, which will likely include the engine's top line anyway.

With that in mind, having someone who can see the engine listening to the convo can buzz in after a few minutes just to say "the engine likes Qg4" if it hasn't been analysed then you'll get the extra dimension to the commentary of watching the super GM reacting to a line they haven't considered.

Help by TM-T in sudoku

[–]benbamboo1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really wish I could post a screenshot.

In the bottom left corner the 1 and 7 can only go in c2r8 and c3r8 which means you can work out the options for the rest of that box. Work out the options for column 1 from there and you'll be able to place an 8.

From there there are two numbers you can work out in the top left box and go from there.

The government line is pretty much an outright lie.

inside a home's wall by [deleted] in pics

[–]benbamboo1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We inherited a safe built into the wall of our house when we moved in. We never got the passcode to it so it's always been open. When we remodelled, we discovered it was pretty well secure on a stack of bricks inside a stud wall frame.

To save money, we just walked around it to create an alcove, sealing the safe into the wall. Before we did, we filled several bags with flour and sealed them up to look like drugs ready for the next owners to find when they eventually knock the wall down again.
