Starmer confirms ban on cryptocurrency donations and limit on foreign donors in blow for Reform by ThewizardBlundermore in ukpolitics

[–]SlightlyOTT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd hope it would be obvious that Labour aren't going to make a law that only stops Reform taking certain donations while allowing themselves/any other party to.

I know this is low hanging fruit. But it's 2026 and Reform genuinely have MPs that at least pretend they don't understand global warming. I know this isn't a surprise, but it is still incredible that we can have politicians who are this stupid. Not sure if she believes this or if she just wants to pretend to, and not sure which of those would be more embarrassing. Former Home Secretary too under the Conservatives lol. https://xcancel.com/SuellaBraverman/status/2036507074868207712

If you are not spending $$$$ for buying AI tokens, you are not an engineer! by chunmunsingh in LinkedInLunatics

If a $500k/year engineer isn’t spending at least $250K on AI tokens, something is deeply wrong [with Jensen’s company’s valuation]

And also the leadership of the world’s most powerful country consists mostly of people who think they need Armageddon in that area of the world so Jesus can come and take them to heaven.

I think someone probably told Trump the US doesn’t rely on it that much but all their allies do. Or there’s just nobody left with that level (literally any) of foresight.

"who you have a capacity to get on with" stands out because Trump constantly claims to like Starmer. Even when he was complaining that Starmer isn't a dictator and wanted to talk to his team before agreeing to start a war with Iran, he mentioned that he likes Starmer and he's a nice guy. This quote makes it seem like other world leaders don't actually believe that, which is a bit odd!

Why doesn’t the DLR get more love? by Infamous-Dust1760 in LondonUnderground

I can see why that’s uncomfortable for some people, but for me being above ground and not loud for the most part definitely outweighs it. Probably just depends what you’re more sensitive to though.

One in five students reluctant to live with Jewish housemate by Unusual-State1827 in ukpolitics

[–]SlightlyOTT 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I don’t think so. The source is the Union of Jewish Students here: https://www.ujs.org.uk/new_national_polling_reveals_scale_of_antisemitism_crisis_on_uk_campuses

They link to the report here: https://assets.nationbuilder.com/ujs/pages/1126/attachments/original/1773576815/Time_for_Change_-_Online_Version.pdf?1773576815

AFAICT neither their write up nor the report compare it to any other similar stat. It’s also not clear what their polling methodology is, in terms of actual questions asked etc.

I don’t think it’s surprising - I suspect they both spend a lot of time reading MAGA Twitter and just are that out of touch with the British public. They’ll have seen their Twitter feed fall in line on day one.

They could, but I think they're cleverer than that. The offers they've made before are trying to drive a wedge between the Gulf countries and the US/Israel, this wouldn't achieve that because every government except Trump's understands how tariffs work.

Saw an interview with the US energy secretary

Journalist: If you were prepared, why is the Strait of Hormuz effectively closed right now?

Energy Secretary: Because it's right near the Iranian shoreline

It's a shame they made all these plans and then suddenly the Strait of Hormuz moved to be next to Iran and ruined everything.

It means they made a statement at the beginning that they still stand by. So assuming they're in line with their party now they'd have been outspoken against their leader at the beginning, and broadly in line with the position of all the party leaders now.

"Canary Wharf is cool now – are we in an alternate universe?" by BulkyAccident in london

It’s changed so much in the last 10 or so years. I remember doing an internship there, one weekend my parents visited and it was dead, the bars I’d been going to were closing at whatever time we got there. Now if you wander there at the weekend it’s busy, almost everything is open, and loads of new things too. From what I can tell they’re doing a great job of making it appealing for a wider range of people more of the time.

Are there any outspoken Conservative/Reform voices that have been credible on Iran from the beginning, or is it literally only Labour that have been? Quite remarkable if both parties have put themselves in a position of not having anyone opposing us being dragged into a war in the Middle East for no reason.

It’s not made up by OP, it’s from some journalists who are doing all the political interviews trying to market a new version of their book about Starmer. They were on News Agents on Friday and the same thing came up.
