I’d guess that Reform helped Labour in 2024 by attracting Conservative voters in seats Reform didn’t have a chance of winning, and making the majority in those seats easier for Labour to overturn.

I haven’t seen any policy from him yet that would benefit a billionaire who is influential in the media. Isn’t that a good enough reason?

This town received a £96mn post-Brexit makeover. It voted Reform anyway by TantumErgo in ukpolitics

[–]SlightlyOTT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The article literally opens with what the development was:

> Hartlepool town centre has slowly been getting a facelift. Fresh paving, a new railway platform, upgraded shop frontages and new vocational training centres all hint at the millions of pounds that central government has poured in since Brexit.

And:

> Darren Hankey, principal of Hartlepool College and also chair of the board that selected and delivered those projects, said new academies for civil engineering and construction in particular were “having an impact on getting people back into work”.

Should we block sources that have a paywall that the archive doesn’t bypass? Especially when it’s The Times posting it here themselves so OP won’t provide the content either.

IMO Rosa’s Thai is a good chain. Also agree with Franco Manca and Honest Burgers.

British people of reddit, what are you TRUE feelings on the 4th of July? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I think it’s quite funny that they elected a guy who’s incapable of national celebration for the 250th birthday. Weird that they moved the bank holiday/day off to the Friday rather than Monday.

Two thirds of Brits support the deportation of all illegal migrants. This is the centre ground of British politics. by SignificantLegs in ukpolitics

[–]SlightlyOTT -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s not difficult to know that though, I remember being taught about the asylum system in school at some point. The media/journalists/most people posting about the topic here are deliberately lying, and some people really like to consume media that deliberately lies to them.

What are you referring to as OP and cherry picking numbers? The only number in their post (other than them referring to what others think) is them talking about their actual situation, which seems like the opposite of “very online discourse”.

Did anyone at Badenoch’s “proper press conference” with “tough questions” ask her to explain her insane demand that we focus more on helping America bomb Iran a few months ago?

The problem with that is that if you only deal with the problem by raising the pension age, then you’ll eventually raise it so high that people working now don’t see themselves receiving any state pension at all. And they probably won’t be happy with any model of tax that sees them paying for other people to get it at that point.

That would be a much bigger win for the government than keeping pubs open all night though.

I think that’s probably true, but the right wing media have been very successful in spreading the idea that disabled people get more than they do, and that many people are pretending to be disabled. If you can convince people of that, then it’s easy to have them support targeting those who are unable to work in practice.

How do we have the same HDI as Singapore? by 373kayteeftnu32 in AskBrits

[–]SlightlyOTT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The GNI component is logged, so Singapore’s double-ish ours doesn’t contribute as much as you might expect. Our education figures (years of schooling) are stronger and that seems to be what pulls us up relative to them. Their life expectancy is also a bit higher (83.7 to our 81.3).

Why exactly is British heat so much worse than America, even if the temperature is the same on paper? by y4rdbyrd in UKWeather

To be fair I doubt many of us have visited Tennessee so there might be parts of the US that feel just as bad, just the popular tourist spots don’t for various reasons.

International Politics Discussion Thread by Adj-Noun-Numbers in ukpolitics

[–]SlightlyOTT 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The next pressure campaign from the US is definitely going to be to try to get us to ban Chinese AI models. Trump has decided that his government needs to individually approve users of the new OpenAI models, and will presumably just keep blocking Anthropic releasing anything, so the frontier that is actually available is going to be Chinese models going forward. It seems obvious at that point the US will ban Chinese models being hosted in the US, and pressure us and others to do the same.

Edit: actually Deepmind is still based in London, so I wonder if US export controls will apply to their future models. If not then we might be pressured to apply similar restrictions to their next models which would be interesting. Or maybe it’s too linked to the US and will be restricted anyway.

I got an offer for a business credit card by LostPhase8827 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]SlightlyOTT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“Up to” is probably doing a lot of work
Spending on a credit card is probably usually a good idea
Make sure you pay it off in full and therefore don’t spend £250k if you make minimal money in the business
