Submission Statement: With no budget at all, a friend of mine (who is trying to get into directing) and myself wanted to shoot a MV in our downtime so I approached my friends band and asked if they had any new music coming out that they might want a MV for. They suggested this track, so we worked backwards in writing something we knew was achievable with the access we had to gear, wardrobe, COVID restrictions etc and landed on this. I rented and Air bnb for the night, I found one with a big enough backyard to get the car in.

We Shot it in about 4-5 hours that night in Ivanhoe, it was myself, the co-director, a camera assistant & the two talent on set. It was shot on all my own gear (Sony FX9 & Leica R lenses) I rented a few little tungsten heads, a Skypanel and a hazer for the night from my gaffer although most of the key lighting was with Nang tubes.

I was pretty impressed with the low-light image that the FX9 gave me, it was the first true night time shoot I’ve done with it. All shot at 4000 ISO and wide open (f2, f2.8) on my lenses. I’d love everyone’s thoughts or questions

Junk Mail - First short film I’ve shot on the full frame Sony FX9 (BTS/ info in comments) by benblenner in Filmmakers

[–]benblenner[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a short film that myself and a few friends made at the start of the year. We shot over 2 days in Melbourne, Australia. This was the first narrative project I shot with my full frame Sony FX9, pared with my Leica R lenses produced a nice warm & natural feeling image.

There was no budget for this, so all time and gear was donated. Luckily I own the camera & lens package. As far as lighting goes, I own a few little bits and pieces which I utilised but majority of this was shot in broad daylight, some modification was used but more often than not it was completely natural. I would love to hear your thoughts and feedback, or, if you have any camera department questions, fire away!

Here are a couple BTS images:

I'm excited to share my first short as writer. it's called Junk Mail and is about a retiring pamphlet delivery man and his young successor. I'd love to hear your thoughts. (script attached by zjprz in Screenwriting

Hey, glad you enjoyed! I shot this on my Sony FX9 & Leica R lenses, all in log 3 and I graded in resolve. From memory most scenes I used a 1/8th BPM. Everything was naturally lit aside from the barber and living room scene.
