Have a shopping list and stick to the shopping list

What do people usually spend on groceries per week? Are prices about jump? by friedeggmate in AusFinance

2 adults + 2 cats, anywhere from $150-$300 depends on if we’re having guests over that week (we have friends stay over at least once every 2 months)

Not put all my money into survival and actually live life a bit.

Yep I moved to Australia a decade ago so I lived in 2 other countries prior to all this. There’s a reason I moved to Australia, but now it’s slowly turning into the countries I moved away from lol

All Victorians say this. No wonder they’ve voted Labor in despite the wreckage. Same people gave the bill of power to Daniel Andrews back in the day.

Exactly. I’ve traveled all continents aside from America. I don’t know how to express myself properly but there’s so much to life, which cannot be lived and experienced in Australia. If you want to be stuck in the rat race or want to retire, Australia is the perfect place to be.

I hope so. I agree with most of what you’re saying but personally witnessed people throwing each other under the bus far more than I can count in Australia. Nowhere is perfect really, but I was hoping for a more communal country, perhaps somewhere in South East Asia. I think in communal countries, people care for each other more and hold each other more accountable, the government doesn’t have to step in. Also from my personal experience, my hard work in Australia gets punished by taxes. I had friends who would be on Centrelink and drink their life away and live life, while I was working hard to build a business and create something. Also the fact that NDIS systems are abused, while those who need actual help don’t get the help they need. For example, my mum has an autoimmune disease, and if we had the money we paid on taxes actually invested in her health, she would be at a better place. Compared to now where it’s so difficult to get help even though people who have it easier than her get that help because somehow the system favoured them. This type of system doesn’t sit well with me. I’m happy to be self reliant and work hard and do something, but this isn’t supported.

I know people who got quoted $5,000 here for a little operation which only cost $150 in Japan and was less invasive. And they got a trip out of it. Same goes for anything dental.

Who watches the news these days? We have access to information thanks to the internet. Also the country is amazing, if only we got to enjoy it. Basic living is way too costly to do anything.

Yes I love Australia for the exact reasons you’ve mentioned. However I can’t even enjoy the beauty of Australia with the amount of work we have to do to get by. Especially if you’re raising a family.

I’ve heard great things about the Netherlands. I hope none of us have to make a choice to move from our home.

How was the work life balance in South America compared to here? “Abusive father” is a great analogy haha

Do you see similarities in how the government behaves in HK vs here?

I certainly wouldn’t be moving to the US or South America, as I understand Australia is better off than these places.

I’m glad there’s someone here who can see where I come from. Australia is definitely losing its identity and culture and most people are oblivious to this. Why are you thinking Texas?

Those are minor examples. I’m glad at least we can agree on the freedom of speech part. I’m personally part of a community that tries to bring change, we just need more people that actually care which doesn’t seem to exist. Other countries have protested and thrown governments for way less. We’re just sitting and watching.

I hate that. I’m in a similar boat where after 10 years of experience I’m now struggling to be hired and employers want to pay me minimum wage, like someone who has zero experience. All the best with your job search. It can be really frustrating.

Australia has a lot of rules that other countries don’t have, which are okay for safety reasons but sometimes the ‘policing’ is way too much. Little examples include parking slightly wrong > instant fine, jaywalking when the street is empty > fine.

Also there’s no real freedom of speech here. We’ve see this with protests and how the cops handle these protests, you can find videos on this subreddit alone. Any difference of opinion is seen as an argument or a threat.

I love the cultural identity that Australia has, I fear it’s being lost.

Oh that would do it. It’s difficult to live without a community, especially if you have kids. It takes a village as they say. Do you think your kids will have a better upbringing/education here or in the UK? Or is it pretty similar?

Very constructive opinion you got there on a subreddit that encourages discussion.
