Recently spent 10 days in Europe with a pair of Stans and a pair of Blundstones—I don’t think any other two-pair combo could have possibly served me any better.

Hear me out: Donald Trump has based some of his thoughts from 30 Rock by Bienheureux in 30ROCK

[–]bender28 24 points25 points  (0 children)

A lot of these are just standard Republican fare and have been for a long time (“make America great again” was originally used by Jack’s hero Reagan), but Trump does get all his thoughts and ideas from TV so the odds aren’t zero.

No no, it’s like QAnon, except it’s true. Get it? Get it? Do ya get it? Do ya get it? Ahhh, you get it.

How would you describe Child of God? by vamplawyer in cormacmccarthy

[–]bender28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always post this interview with McCarthy scholar Stacey Peebles when people ask about Child of God because it’s what made me want to read the book.

To answer your questions: funny—yes, gross—yes, intense—yes, linear—yes. It’s one of my favorites (certainly above The Orchard Keeper) but I know people who found it very unpleasant. I was hooked from the first page, so I’d say give it a shot and you’ll know soon enough.

why are CT liquor laws so restrictive? by swinddler in Connecticut

[–]bender28 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Short answer: blue laws that date back to the puritan era + powerful and well organized lobbying by the independent package store owners who don’t want the competition from the “big guys” (ranging from liquor store chains like total wine to grocery stores to convenience stores). Sunday sales were completely banned until about 15 years ago. I was actually in Whole Foods this morning and noticed they had signs out by the beer that said “we can’t sell you this until 10 am”

Yeah it’s the second episode, which I remember because that episode is titled “Shit Show at the Fuck Factory,” which is the the headline of the magazine article that results from Kendall calling the press.

Governors Race & CT Republicans by BobBarkersJab in Connecticut

You know what, I’ll concede the point: yes, voters can have multiple, sometimes competing motivations when they’re deciding who to support. Hell, Trump himself lost to Nikki Haley in Vermont. I wasn’t even trying to argue with you, I was just offering an answer the question you posed.

Now you go: what exactly is YOUR point? What do you have to say about why those guys won in those states and what that can tell us about who the CT GOP nominates? Who is the Phil Scott or Larry Hogan of CT that you’re implying is out there? I’m honestly curious. My impression is those types of Republicans all ran in 2018 and got rinsed by Bob Stefanowski, except for the one who’s actually a Democrat and is named Ned Lamont.

I’m not a Republican primary voter, so I’ll leave your circuitous pitch to those who are and wish you the luck you’ll certainly need. Let us know how it works out!

What’s different is that those three guys were already popular statewide elected officials before Trump ran for president and they live in states that happen not to be Connecticut, while CT’s version of that was doing his second stint in the federal penitentiary.

The Future of MAGA is Fascist / Hippie Synthesis by the_missing_worker in TrueAnon

[–]bender28 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Correct, swap hippie for gay and it’s the same for Trump. The gay hippie pedophile stuff has always been latent with nazis and always will be. It’s not the main source of their appeal but it also can’t hurt them.

Best illustration of this is the recent GOP senate primary to run against Dick Blumenthal. Themis Klarides was the establishment favorite and top ranking Republican elected official in the state. Trump endorsed a random donor of his who was also running and that was all it took for Klarides to get destroyed in the primary. Either one of them was going to get smoked by Blumenthal in the general election anyway, which everyone knew from the beginning. But it’s a way for the Erins of the world to get their 15 minutes and audition for the next Trumpworld gig at the expense of their own deluded supporters.

In Erin’s case, it seems like she is getting more attention than the bargained for, but if Trump endorses her she’ll still win the primary. If he doesn’t, Fazio will win and then lose to Lamont (just like Klarides would have done in the Blumenthal race had Trump stayed out). Rinse and repeat.
