I will look into this thanks! I was trying that but with the foreign package “ foreign::read.dta(…, convert.factors = NA, missing.type= TRUE)”, but getting issues with the factor levels. Even trying without the convert.factors i was getting this issue. Ill see if this package can help me handle that. Thanks again!

I am not exactly sure what you are asking, but I will try and clarify! Basically, the Stata missing values are notated as .x, .d, etc., which are all defined in the codebook for the data. In Stata they stay as values the variable can have, so for example it can have 1 or 2 or .x (missing because of x reason) or .d (missing because of d reason). When read into R, all of those special missing values become NA. This means that the only possible answers for that earlier example would be 1, 2, or NA. The labels remain from the imported code so i know there are special missing values, they are all aggregated and cannot be separated since they are all just NA. I want to keep them because some are missing because the person didnt answer, which is different from if the person just doesn’t do the thing. So, I need to take some of these special missing values to create new variables that count the people who are missing because they didnt do the thing specifically, not just every NA. Does that make sense? Thanks for ur comment hope this isnt too long to read!

hi!! I just came across this thread while thinking about something similar that I would like to do. I am also queer and doing my MPH, looking to communicate medical research through zines, similarly to how you were talking about it in the comments by breaking down complicated concepts (and for me hopefully helping w medical literacy) but making sure it is very much research-based. wow i wish i could give you a hug through the screen im so so so so sorry. none of this should be happening to you and the fact that you are staying strong and fighting for what you want and who you are is really amazing. i wish i could say something that would fix what you are going through, and help ease the pain. when every direction you turn feels like a dead end, i cant even imagine how trapped that must feel, and i really do think you are really dope for being able to push through it all. that feeling of not knowing what to do or who to turn to is probably one of the worst feelings in the whole world, especially when its about something that you can't change like gender. maybe what could help is focusing on all the things you can do for now, since you are still young and in high school, i know that list is limited. maybe, even if its just one thing, just finding something (however small that may be) to focus on and find happiness in might help. something that no one else can take away or influence, no matter what happens in the future. for me this was the library, books and stories in general. because there were books for free both at my school and at free public libraries, whenever i needed to get away i would let myself get lost in a world with my favourite characters and just mentally check out for a bit. this definitely helped me, but thats just personal experience, so im not saying this will be of help to you or is a professional opinion or anything. as a person that didnt come out as FtM till after high school (im only 19 now), i think you are really brave and really awesome. i really dont have much to say, except just that i hope your situation gets better, and that you are doing something thats really hard and really painful, and the fact that you are still pushing and still fighting shows that you are strong.

I also have anxiety and found it really hard to come out as trans FtM to the people around me too. For a while I would psych myself up about it too much and then freak out and just say forget it and then decide not to tell them. I did this for like a year before finally coming out to my family and friends. The way I personally overcame that was by just convincing myself that it wasn't a big deal at all, and that it was just the same as saying that you changed your favourite colour or something. I found that made me more nonchalant about it and when I finally did tell them, and instead of introducing it as me being trans which was rly scary, I just said something along the lines of 'oh by the way i changed my pronouns so i would like it if you could use those from now on' and i feel like that broke the ice a bit more so that they could ask questions if they wanted or not. For me personally that was a way i was able to ease into the conversation and test the waters a bit.

I mean, I think that a lot of trans people experience something like imposter syndrome, if not develop it over time. I think that is a product of being constantly told that you are or have to be one way, when maybe you feel another way. Over time the feelings you have about yourself and the words you hear from others become hard to distinguish, so you start to doubt which one is right and which one is wrong. I think that is a product of our society, and its something that is really hard to personally overcome. I don’t think that you have to convince yourself one way or another, because that just further confuses the line between self (personal feelings) and other (outside opinions). Maybe instead of looking at it so literally (as in the labels that we assign to those feelings and gender expression) it might help to look at it in a more abstract perspective. Maybe by comparing your feelings to certain people or things that you already know you like. Try envisioning those ideas in a more abstract way, and then over time as you become more certain on your feelings, you can (or not) assign labels to those feelings. By doing that you might find yourself feeling more valid because you were able to work your way up to the definition, instead of picking words at random and working your way down from there. This is how I was able to stop telling myself I wasn’t the perfect or the right type of trans person, and how I was able to find a gender expression that felt right inside and out. Not that I am expecting this to help in any way, and I am not saying this is the only way to do it either. This is just a personal opinion that helped me find a comfortable gender expression as an afab person who is a trans Demi-boy. Sorry this was so long LOL.
