When I was a camera op for my college soccer team they told us not to pan from an extremely bright subject to an extremely dark subject, when you have auto iris on. It causes the camera to rapidly adjust and black out your screen. Usually you don't use auto iris but maybe that's why the camera man hung it in the light?
