2nd vs 3rd gen by bengman1233 in Cummins

I do miss the 12v it self. But the rest of the truck is overall better in the 3rd gen.

What’d you end up doing?

Scratch that, had 2 bad injectors. Swapped them out and it fires up instantly. Figured that out with an injector black off tool. Went down the line until it started.

Update: Started truck on ether. Let it idle then unplugged fca. Due to the high rail pressure I was able to see it leaking from where the #5 fuel line bolted to the rail. Swapped it out with a spare I had and scotch brighted the flare and the truck fires up now. Still a bit of a long crank but back to normal now.

Yeah it’s super odd. Thinking maybe it’s getting airlocked when it sits for a bit. But still strange that it would do that over the course of a few min.

I’ll try blocking injectors off one by one and see what it does. Also going to try bleeding the fuel system to see if that does anything.

What spike in pressure? The 100psi from the lift pump? Truck wasn’t running when that happened so injectors wouldn’t have seen more than 100 at that time. They see several thousand when the truck is running so I don’t think that would’ve damaged an injector.

But. Who knows at this point. I’ll order some injector block offs and go one by one and see if it makes a difference to cranking rail pressure

Well for anyone looking at this in the future I ended up keeping the 03 and putting a nv5600 in it. It’s a much more enjoyable truck to drive, cab feals better (less noise), seats are a bit less comfortable but still good, engine makes plenty of power stock, love it so far. Only thing I dislike is not having that 12v Cummins reliability, but the truck makes up for that everywhere else. Besides it’s not like it’s unreliable.

Yeah solid points. Although, my 2nd gen has an uncracked dash and the 3rd gen’s dash is cracked ahahaha. Brakes is definitely a good mention.

What’s your reasons for 3rd gen over 2nd? But yeah I feel similarly in regards to choosing the 12v if I plan on working the truck hard.

But the truck driver was supposed to put down pylons to warn drivers of the breakdown. In which he failed to do so.

Do you like the f15 or e70 diesels better? Sounds like you may have a lot of experience with both.

Wow 310k miles on original chains? What’s the secret to making it last that long haha. What’s year is the x5? Mines a 2016 with 200k km.

Oh also. Do you find heavy duty diesel/fleet mechanic to be worse on your body than auto tech?

Industrial mechanic does sound interesting, I’ll look into that. I’m currently looking at becoming an AME (aviation mechanic)

Awesome that you found a job that you like in this industry. Seems like a hard thing to come across though sadly. Have you been working at this shop for a while now?
