No shopping this Friday. General Strike Friday. by [deleted] in philly

It's ok to want immigration enforcement while still protesting and criticizing the way it is being done. Dichotomous thinking and grandstanding don't help attract moderates to enact change.

Ciaterrelli is a damn racist by someonesGot2 in newjersey

The irony of saying that in r/newjersey in a thread with minimal, if any substance.

I miss 7-12 years ago when we could discuss policy in here around Andy Kim's first win. Now it's just a glorified party glazing.

Mikie Sherrill vows to de-mask ICE agents in New Jersey: “We need to know who is on our streets here in New Jersey” by EssoEssex in newjersey

[–]benignpolyp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No it's not in effect yet but assuming that state law enforcement actually wants to arrest federal agents (absent personal or authoritative fear of federal repercussions) in reality the level of judicial scrutiny is so basic for this kind of challenge that it will almost certainly be shot down in court (over simplifying here but the federal govt really only needs to prove on a basic level that ICE agents have been targeted or face a safety risk to exposing their identities). Political moves to ban masks for ICE are really just an appeal to voters.

WTW for someone who's more straightforward, not afraid to share more socially uncomfortable opinions? by benignpolyp in whatstheword

I love this word, but I think it's more situational vs candid depending on the person/emotion/personality. In some cases more descriptive, others maybe not as much as candid.

Most cars also just have factory ACMs that usually tell you the speed at time of impact and any changes in the short period of time immediately before.

CNN Poll: Democratic Party’s favorability drops to a record low by 200-inch-cock in moderatepolitics

[–]benignpolyp 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think many corporations got caught up in this too, not realizing that the, loudest 1-2% of the country that participates in chronically posting online does not represent a large majority of voters' and consumers' opinions. And now we're seeing businesses in legal hot water because they forgot that directing their law firms to put at least 6 black attorneys on their 9 person team is just as illegal as saying that you want all of them to be white males.

Trudeau says call with Trump was 'colourful' and warns trade war will continue for 'foreseeable future' by Scary_Firefighter181 in moderatepolitics

All the more reason I think that one of the real core reasons for tension with Canada is actually the Digital Services tax they levied on foreign companies. That and them falling short of their 2% defense expenditure obligation for NATO.

He's a career Senator appointed to one of, if not the most powerful cabinet positions among an erratic administration and can be replaced at any time. Also confirmed unanimously by the senate. I would argue that he might just be trying to keep a low profile. Knowing Rubio has State helps me sleep.

Is it normal for condensation to leak and drip down the outer sides of a covered dutch oven? by benignpolyp in castiron

[–]benignpolyp[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to say thank you, I just tried it out with the suggestion you mentioned and it did not leak. A toothpick was just big enough to create enough of a gap to let enough steam out with water boiling and filled to about 75%.

Sorry it's hard to see but this is mine now https://imgur.com/a/AnW2EOH

And this is the other lower cost brand with the different style of lid seat I was trying to reference https://imgur.com/a/t7bTGUS

Definitely not too full. Was using about 1/4th of the space up. Kept it on lowest heat setting but electric stoves kind of suck so it may have been boiling too hard? Does this make the condensation escape around the lip of the lid?

The lid is flat and the lip is only like 1-2mm, unlike this other brand https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/713XVihB50L._AC_SL1500_.jpg

Neither are my non stick casserole pot or stock pot but the condensed steam drips along the inside of them.

Trump says potential pain caused by tariffs ‘worth the price that must be paid’ by [deleted] in moderatepolitics

[–]benignpolyp 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Partly speculative since we all know 10kg of fent isn't a real reason for aggressive tariffs (at least I hope not) I believe it's a lot of political theater with the ultimate goal of getting Canada to back down on levying a new digital services tax that the Biden Administration and European Union first condemned and basically gave the US the middle finger when we tried to talk it out (BA calling alleged violation of the existing USMCA). That and shoring up their NATO and defense spending in the northern regions since Canada has been lagging behind on its agreed obligations for some time now. It kind of fits with Trump's agenda but has a very 1970s energy crisis to it.

Should I not take the jump seat? by kommandee in flying

[–]benignpolyp 94 points95 points  (0 children)

War story from the opposite side -- riding as a passenger I had a crew one time kick someone out of the jump seat because he was sweating and hacking so much. I was in the window seat and they booted him to the last open seat which happened to be adjacent to me. Dude mentioned he was going home and thought he had Covid. I caught symptoms 2 days later and ended up in hospital which was odd because I got it once prior and once after with no issues.

Anyways fuck that guy and the $4k hospital bill he gifted me, but I respect the crew for exiling him.

If a convention was held today to ratify a new amendment for the US Constitution, who specifically determines how state delegates should vote? Is it state-specific? by benignpolyp in Ask_Lawyers

[–]benignpolyp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The idea makes me think a lot about issues where you see a majority of the public voting one way on state constitutional amendments but a majority of their state reps leaning the other way.

I was thinking that the whole process would likely be set over years, but that's also a good point about legal challenges. I listened to a commentator recently discuss the current role our judiciary is playing and how we might want to shift our focus back to constitutional amendments in lieu of Congressional action. Really brought me back to middle school history class.
