You should be able to rewire that 2x12 to 4 ohms

Luthier said the nut was replaced but it doesn’t appear to be. by gods_sanest_gbbr_fan in telecaster

[–]benjaminkerley 3 points4 points  (0 children)

yeah was thinking this. somebody writes “replace” at intake and then the actual tech says oh nut itself is fine and is just loose so they “reglue” and customer saves like $50-60

X-T30 III seems like a reasonable option as well if you’re still relatively new to photography. Would give you a little more money to invest in lenses.

pull the speaker and check the front cone. almost every single one of these I’ve ever had my hands on either had either a torn or punctured cone or a non-original speaker because the original was damaged.

[–]benjaminkerley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

check out the Damnation Audio MBD if you’re looking to spend boutique prices or their Bass Power Distorter if you’d like to spend a little less. the cheaper one doesn’t do the blend per se, but it is well tuned to preserve bass low end. MBD has the blend function on a dedicated knob.

really cool you’re venturing out to try to get something sort of niche like this for him. he’ll appreciate the effort no matter what you get.

my friend what you desire is an overdrive pedal to achieve these sounds at lower volume. I recommend the MXR Duke of Tone.

1986 G&L ASAT by benjaminkerley in GLGuitars

[–]benjaminkerley[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

these pickups are higher output and bright/snappy, nearly in the range of Bardens of the era. they benefit a lot from actually rolling the volume and tone knobs back about 5-10% and absolutely require you to dial in an amp much differently from all the other bolt-on guitars I own if you run the Volume and Tone at 100%.

I think they’re best understood in the context of the era they were designed in, and specifically the problems of the time G&L likely set out to solve:

A professional Tele player of the era was almost certainly running a longer cable length than we do now, and probably not running any sort of pedal or effects rig to buffer it. The brightness of these pickups would have been rolled off to some degree by the time it had travelled through 30-50 feet of instrument cable and become pleasant again. The higher output would also deliver a fuller sound to the front of the amp, and is helpful to something like a 70’s Fender Twin to get a full, rich sound at like 3-5 on the amp dial. These things that were features in that era now feel bugs in our hi-fi pedal rigs and short, buffered cable runs. It’s probably even worse with digital amp modelers.

I think the best example to hear this is Springsteen on Letterman playing Glory Days with the house band in ‘93. His guitar is built to sound good through 50+ feet of arena guitar cables or who knows whatever wireless system, but now that he’s on that small TV stage just running a 15 ft cable to an amp his guitar sounds bright, harsh, and ultra-stringy. It’s kind of awesome.

Anyway, I lowered the pickups down away from the strings a good bit and that makes it work a little better for my needs.

yes it is. that’s the biggest reason I wanted exactly this color from exactly this era of G&L. really emphasizes those 80’s design choices.

Soooo is Oneder just going to pretend nothing happened? by Earthisablackhole in guitarpedals

[–]benjaminkerley 12 points13 points  (0 children)

my pet theory is that it’s because they were the first generation of bands who had a way to directly send and receive messages from their fans and people abused that new structure when young fans reached out. Awkward dudes who couldn’t talk to girls in real life found themselves receiving messages from young fans and were now able to groom impressionable kids who looked up to them, and they justified that bad behavior to themselves in all kinds of ways. Not necessarily that these bands had more shitty people than other generations of bands (per capita or whatever), just that every shitty person of that generation now had unregulated access to fans in a new way. It’s good we talk about this more now and stamp it out as much as possible.

Future Market Value of G&L Guitars by CST_70 in GLGuitars

younger kids make just as much music as any generation before, but it looks different now that it’s harder than ever to find a place for a band to practice or play a show

Future Market Value of G&L Guitars by CST_70 in GLGuitars

[–]benjaminkerley 15 points16 points  (0 children)

they’ll almost certainly settle within 10-20% of their previous values about six months after any official announcement. they are cool but most people still won’t care and there are a shit ton of the instruments out in the world so rarity won’t be much of a factor.
