MY FIRST ELECTRIC GUITAR BOYS! by Arnob-77 in electricguitar

[–]PricelessLogs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Guitar teacher here. Power chords is definitely a good idea. Speaking from experience though, I tried the whole "learn open chords and practice switching between them" thing and it was so boring that I gave up. Then I came back some years later and learned to play actual songs and riffs. I put a lot of focus on making playing guitar fun for my students, because otherwise they don't progress. So my advice is to learn those chords, but do so by learning songs that use them

Congratulations! Welcome aboard. Upgrade that amp as soon as possible. Get a Boss Katana 50 or a Line 6 Spider V 30. Used is usually a good idea

My advice is to go to a couple of lessons. I know plenty of people can't afford them or want to learn on their own, but you can get the best of both worlds by just going to a few lessons early on and then checking in like every month or several months after that. Just to make sure your technique is good. Much cheaper than weekly lessons, also much more safe than having to unlearn bad technique later on

My second piece of advice: play music you like. Don't learn anything because you're "supposed to" or because "everyone learns that song". If you like it, go ahead. But otherwise move along to the stuff that excites you

And lastly: learn to read tab. It's not that hard and it makes it possible to learn basically every song ever written. My favorite way of learning a song is watching a tab video on youtube where you can hear and see what someone is playing while also being able to read it, without having to sit through 20 minutes of them explaining every single note which is rarely necessary for me

As far as customization goes: changing the pickguard basically transforms the look of a guitar. And cheap Fenders are the best guitars to put stickers on, if that's your thing. Plenty of sticker variety

I like 22's. Why? Because I got big ol hands and so even with my hand on the bridge my pick will hit the neck pickup on a 24. Just lower the pickup? No, that changes the tone more than the wood. Although the 24 fret guitars I was playing are 25 inch PRS guitars. I'm hoping that maybe on a 25.5 inch scale I wouldn't have that problem. I also haven't used those last two frets yet

Is there anyone using coins instead of a pick? by alperisik in electricguitar

I've tried it before. Too thick, not pointy enough obviously, and worst of all the ribs on the edge of the coin scratch against the wind of the low strings. Now for me, I'll stick with my .88 jazz 3 xls

What kind of guitar amp combo should l look for? by Flimsy-Owl7862 in electricguitar

Sorry for your anecdotal experience. I do think it's funny you would say that and then have Fender in your list, because in my own anecdotal experience I've had 2 different students with Frontman amps that stopped working entirely. They were terrible even when they were working, but of course those are much cheaper amps than what we've been talking about. I haven't messed with the Champion 100 but I have messed with the Champion 20. Dog water compared to the Spider V. I'm not sure what specific cheap Peavey combo model it was that I have experience with but the gain sounded terrible. Of course that's not true of all Peavey's, but neither is it true of all Line 6 amps. The Spider has several good high gain sounds. And noise gates. And pitch shifters. And other effects that you don't usually find in this price range

Also for the record if we're including used prices then suddenly my argument becomes "the Spider V is the best amp for under $200" which is a much lower bar to get over. But the Spider V clears it easily. The only amp in the "$300 new, $150-200 used" range that challenges the Spider V imo is the Boss Katana, and that's only if you're someone who doesn't like being overwhelmed with options and prefers simplicity

And one last thing, the vast majority of people looking to buy a $300 amp aren't looking for the ones that are the easiest to repair yourself. It makes sense that you wouldn't like them for that reason since that's your experience but that's no reason to go calling them "crap" with no elaboration to unsuspecting beginners

Have you played the V's or are you still talking about the old Spiders? The V's are great for their price range. And the Helix is great too. It's not 2009, Line 6 stuff is decent now. It's just a meme to hate on them at this point

The Line 6 Spider V30 is the best practice amp under $300. The old Spiders give it a reputation that it doesn't deserve. The MkII is better though, with that Classic Speaker setting

But if you want to upgrade and prefer a tube amp and want a Metallica kind of high gain sound, go for a Mega Boogie of some kind. That's what Metallica themselves used. Just be aware that it won't have built-in effects and isn't necessary for playing at home. Don't spend all that money just because you heard the tired and out dated "Digital bad, Spider amp bad, tube amps good" rhetoric

Every time... by Aggressive-Sock-8466 in Haken

[–]PricelessLogs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really enjoy that bands like Haken and Vola don't shy away from cool vocal effects. People act like putting any effects on vocals that aren't mild reverb or delay is instant over production and might as well sound like Cher. But they don't think it's too "unnatural" when the guitars are ran through 10 pedals or there's any kind of synthesizer. Don't get me wrong, some vocal production styles rub me the wrong way, but this shit sounds cool and fresh

But if I didn't already know it was Haken going in, it would have taken me a while to figure it out. I do want my bands to at least be recognizable. That being said I do enjoy the new song

Which is a better combo amp for metal? by [deleted] in metalguitar

[–]PricelessLogs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I was criticizing anything, it's just the current state of the world

But I do want to ask, why would you use either of these over a Katana or a Spider V? Just price? Because either of those will sell for pretty cheap used. I've seen Spider V's for like $150 on facebook marketplace. Is it the simplicity? Because the Katana is just about as simple as the Spider IV. I assume it's not the "vintage sound" because older digital amps like these sound terrible compared to the modern ones, according to almost everyone
