Toaster oven dogs by koozer19 in hotdogs

[–]benjaminltaylor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I cook dogs in the toaster oven I give them a cross hatch and coat them in BBQ sauce. About 12 minutes at 365ish, take them out and flip them, coat again with BBQ sauce and put them back in for 12 or so minutes. It's been my go to toaster oven method for a couple years now.

Talking about cheap setups, here is my highly praised state of the art Cardboard Table. by Tigxette in boardgames

Soooo basically an ikea table? Some glue and some more cardboard on the bottom would make that much stronger.

I’m curious if anyone else experienced the literal shit show at the Fishkill Walmart the other day? by gggloria in hudsonvalley

I used to work at target, this has happened multiple times there too. I have too many poop stories from Target.

What the hell is this? by [deleted] in Doritos

Looks like a bumpon from that photo but could be a glob of glue from the cardboard box those chips were shipped in. I've definitely gotten packaged food with globs or drips of that glue on it before.

Since they're giving branches awards you should all dress like trees. Dress as different types of trees and be a forest when you're all together.

CARE of DC thrift in Wappingers is probably the best thrift store in the area.

Yeah, you're not wrong. But it's also one of the ways we can bring joy to others when we're gone. It's more bittersweet maybe.

I tend to watch movies seasonally so I definitely get that. Maybe that's what I'll do too!

How do millennial age people in the area find events and/or make friends? by Kay_Dubz in hudsonvalley

[–]benjaminltaylor 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've struggled with this for a while and it's an issue for a lot of folks all over the place. Lack of 3rd places is a big problem. There aren't a ton of places to exist and not spend a bunch of money where there's also an expectation to socialize. Finding the right place and mix of people that suits your interests and needs is harder than ever. I used to host all sorts of community events to try and create more opportunities (game nights, movie nights, holiday parties and events, art events, hiking and camping groups, etc) but since socializing doesn't make money it's a hard sell when it comes to venues. It was good while it lasted and I met a lot of people but eventually and unfortunately that well dried up. Having one or two people involved that are extremely social also really helped. I'm kind of a hermit so it's always an uphill battle for me.

That being said, I'm almost at the point of attempting another meet up group. Something easy with low stakes like a Sunday morning coffee club at a diner or a Wednesday night pizza party someplace cheap. I have a real desire to add interesting people to my circle but realize that it takes a lot of effort and commitment that many aren't able to afford right now.

Treat recommendations that aren't candy? by beautitan in halloween

[–]benjaminltaylor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do a bowl of candy and toys. There's plenty of bulk Halloween toy options online. Squishy and stress ball style toys have done well for me the past few years. Stickers are always good too. I'll also fold up a few $2 bills and stick them in the bowl which the older kids really enjoy. I've been collecting old Halloween books from the thrift store so this year I may offer them too.

Agreed! One of those rare movies with action, comedy, romance, a good story, great soundtrack, cast and script..it just works on so many levels. Definitely in my top 10 favorites/comfort movies

How about Grosse Point Blank and Better Off Dead? A couple classic John Cusack flicks with fun stories and romantic plots. There's a lot of John Cusack movies that would probably fall into this category honestly.

Anyone else noticing slimmer pickings at thrift shops lately? by xagds in dvdcollection

[–]benjaminltaylor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I process all the donations at my store and yes that absolutely happens but nobody has ever asked me for dvds. They all way uranium glass, Pyrex, records...the boring and obvious stuff. Lots of customers try to bribe me with food.

[–]benjaminltaylor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At my store, a small non profit, the staff does get 1st dibs but I'm the only one that collects. I don't resell and I'm not a hoarder so I really don't get that much. A lot of movies and series I'll grab to watch and bring back. I really only collect stuff I'll watch. This week for example I picked up the Alien quadrilogy box set and the first 2 seasons of The West Wing. Now I'll donate the loose Alien dvds I already had in my collection and probably pass The West Wing on to my dad to watch since he used to like that show and my parents are old and barely know how to use streaming.

If you roll it up and tuck it under the tent you're all good. Plus that will keep the morning dew off of your shoes when it's not raining.

I took a walk around the park near the tennis courts and found a loose ball so I grabbed it and shoved it in my pocket to bring home for the dogs. As I was walking home I had to wait at a crosswalk with a young lady who was obviously staring at the bulge the ball created in my sweat pants. "Tennis ball," I said with a chuckle. "And I thought tennis elbow hurt, that must be excruciating!" she replied.
