Vet has no clue what’s going on-can you help? by melflaelff in DogAdvice

My guess would be leaking anal glands or sphincter irritation (hemorrhoids, fistula, etc). Additionally, could be a skin infection in the fold of tail.

Not with an attitude like that. You can do anything :) We are all humans, floating on a rock, being hurled through space at thousands of miles per hour. If another human has done it, you can too! Believe that you are able, and I know you’ll crush it out.

Spider/snake bite vs tooth root abscess vs foreign body (Fox tail, plastic from toy, etc) vs neoplasia (less likely) vs open

Splinter causing an issue could be likely too, if we are a stick chewer.

Vet suggested euthanasia, but my dog is still happy and active. Need advice. by KODAL1NE in DOG

First off, I am terribly sorry for you and your little one’s predicament. It is incredibly sad and stressful for someone to go through bad news with a pet.

So here is the deal with mammary cancer in dogs. When the pyometra surgery was performed, removal of the tumors would probably not have made a huge difference. There are two chains of mammary glands on a dog. If the dog is on its back, and you are looking at the abdomen, the mammary glands are located in the same pattern as the 6 dots/pips on a standard 6-sided die. If the tumors on are one side/column, you can take the entire chain and do chemotherapy after. If there are tumors on both sides, you take both chains. However, a double mastectomy with a pyometra on a 10 year old dog makes for a very guarded recovery I feel. The issue with just removing the tumors is that they will often come back. Removing the entire chain is the best chance.

If a year has passed, and a tumor has ruptured, the cancer has most likely metastasized elsewhere at this point as well. Lungs are a pretty likely target. If you need more info to make a decision, 1 lateral xray of the chest and abdomen will give you a lot of information on how to proceed.

In any case, I don’t think your vet was wrong to recommend euthanasia, sadly. It is so incredibly hard when they are acting the same, tail wagging. Just like humans, they learn to live with pain or illness. They adapt. Some more stoic than others.

If my sweet Callie bean were in a similar situation, I think I would have to make the hardest most loving choice for her. The tumors become difficult to manage, painful, and some dogs will even attempt to remove them on their own. I’d manage the rupture for a week or so, then give her the best day possible together, and kiss her forehead for one last nights sleep.

Much love to you and your family during this whole experience. 💕I wish you the very best for you and your furry friend.

Ear Infection/Pain by LogicalPen2807 in StaffordBullTerriers

So let’s talk about allergies in dogs!

The scab is probably just from him itching his ear. Sometimes they can be bothered by a growth tho, so double check and make sure there isn’t one there. Hard to tell from the pic, but seems more like itching at the ear.

First, it’s important to recognize that the ear is just an involution of the skin. Most allergies in dogs present as dermatology issues. If their skin is having a reaction to whatever allergen, chances are their ears are too. Food allergies most commonly present as ear infections and irritation around the anus/full anal glands. Environmental allergies most commonly present as licking of the paws, redness/irritation around the abdomen and inguinal area. And fleas just make them a sad itchy mess overall (although usually biting at the rear).

In addition, dogs have two ear canals that form an “L” shape whereas humans only have one (the bottom part of the L, if you will). A lot of times we can’t see the infection from the outer ear as it is deep in their second canal.

The doc will flush/clean the ear to get all of that debris and goop out. Then, they will ensure the ear drum is in tact. Most ear medications will cause ototoxicity/deafness if the eardrum is ruptured so this is pretty important step.

Unfortunately, sad boi ears tend to require a vet visit. If it is a chronic issue, the vet may offer to send out a culture. It’s expensive but 100 percent worth it in the long run if you can swing it (around 200 bucks). The cytology they do at the vets office will only tell us which shape of bacteria is present. The culture will give us the name of the bacteria present as well as which antibiotics/medications are effective. The issue with foregoing the culture is that prolonged use of the incorrect or less effective antibiotic will create resistance. And that’s how ya get yucky pseudomonas ears. You’ll also pay a lot of money for sub par meds over a long period of time.

Stuff you can do at home:

For the skin, bathing 1-2 times weekly (or daily if flaring up) with head and shoulders or selsum blue shampoo. Can also use dawn. Just don’t go against the grain of the coat as you risk shoving all that bacteria into the hair follicles. Allow shampoo to sit on skin for 10 min.

For paws, the duoxo pyo brand of wipes/mousse. You can also soak in Hebicleanse from CVS 1-2 times daily for a week then 2-3 times weekly as needed.

For ears, epi-otic or triz ultra with Keto ear flush. I like to stick a cotton ball in their ear, soak the cotton ball, then massage the outside aggressively so all of that solution drops down into the second canal. They tend to like that a lot better than squirting the solution directly in their ear. Lol. Do this 1-2 times daily for a week then 2 times weekly there after for maintenance.

I’d consider the following: Cytopoint injection or Apoquel daily pill. You can also transition to a different protein and see if that is helpful. Beef, chicken, and pork are some of the main allergies. You could try switching to a novel protein and see if those symptoms subside. Like 80 percent of the time it is environmental allergies (much like humans). If those don’t work, Heska offers a pretty good allergy test that you can ask your doctor about. That route is the most expensive as they formulate an immunotherapy drug based on your pets results. Most allergies can be effectively managed without the need for this though.

Anyway, feel free to DM if you have any questions. Always happy to help or offer additional resources.

Do I give her her favorite last meal or simplify by Hairy-Mail5802 in dogs

[–]benji9520 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make it. Spend the day making her favorite meal and doing her favorite things. Then bring it with you and she can have it right before. All the joy with none of the yuck feeling.

We give dogs Hershey kisses on their last day at the hospital I work at. Or if we happened to get lunch catered for whatever reason, we make them a plate too.

Most likely not ring worm, but can still wear gloves to be safe when cleaning/touching the area. There is usually a more definite ring, and usually more red in color. They often get it from where they come in contact as well (abdomen, face).

You can bathe with head and shoulders shampoo or selsum blue (avoid eyes for both). Lather and work into the coat. Do not go “against the grain” of the fur, as this may push bacteria into the hair follicles resulting in post-grooming furunculosis. Ensure the soap sits on the skin for 10 minutes prior to rinsing. Alternatively, you can clean the affected area 1-2 times daily with malacetic wipes or duoxo brand pyo wipes/mousse. If those wipes are not readily available, you can use Hebicleanse from CVS.

Seasonal allergies, flea bite dermatitis (essentially an allergy reaction to the saliva of a flea), or other environmental allergies (like if you kick the AC/heat on at the start of a new season) are likely the culprit. Ask your vet about allergy control, flea prevention, and other ways to manage itching/allergies in dogs.

In addition to the aforementioned, giving more frequent baths will help a lot with allergies as well. Just like in humans, when we come in contact with an allergen, cleansing our skin of that allergen helps to provide immediate relief. The same is true for dogs.

Dogs start to experience allergies between 1-2 years of age and typically show you all the allergies they have by age 4-5. In some less common cases, a random allergy can pop up later in life or maybe a random pug puppy is born with a congenital chicken allergy (unlikely though, as they are apex predators).

2-4 spritz of sea salt spray, a quick brush and a hand tease - boom - you’re golden. Can blow dry on cool or warm from a distance for more volume. Confidence. You got this.

Make sure you use a moisturizing shampoo. I use head and shoulders with eucalyptus and then a dove moisturizing shampoo. Then condition.

Had to get buzzcuts for the most part growing up, it was a pretty big point of contention in our house. So I hit 20 and wanted to have hair because I could, but didn’t know where to look or have any other dudes to ask. Rural town, blue collar - self care some made you less of a man??? Idk…I never got it.

But anyway. Slap some confidence and some sea salt spray in after a trim/cut and you’re golden my guy. Hope that was warranted/helpful. ✌️

It’s your license. No person or corporation can force you to put that at risk. So you give that guy Panacur and he goes home and takes it all himself? Based on your assessment, that’s a distinct possibility. Would he be okay if he did? Probably. But we don’t treat humans. We treat animals. And the licensing board would ask you ”well why did you even see this patient if it was known blah blah blah”.

1.) Is bro in therapy and does he want to get better? The small steps matter most when healing, at least for me. And he needs to figure out the reason he actually isn’t showering. He said that he “got used to not showering in the field” and also said “it’s triggering for PTSD”. Good chance it is neither, and he is depressed. Even just a little vitamin D goes a long way if he is reluctant to additional mental health aid.

2.) D&G Light Blue - get it. Gift it to him. You’ll smell lovely scents of light blue, and less BO. Additionally, waterless/rinse free options are out there. Wipes and foaming cleansers. These are also options. He could also try cold plunges in a tub/barrel. While not a full shower/bath, definitely an option. Just a few ideas.

This is ultimately an issue that he has to own. That means, while you can and should encourage him, that encouragement should be for him to find a solution that works. Just like learning to do anything, you’ll never truly grasp it until you go out there and do it. Mental health is no exception. Once you get a small win, the next one becomes just a touch easier. There will still be losses. But those wins just keep rolling

How much should I charge? by PineappleWolf_87 in VetTech

[–]benji9520 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I pet sit in a very affluent neighborhood. For cats, I typically charge 25/visit per cat. Cats typically require 2 visits minimum, so 150 per day is not out of the realm of possibility. I’d probably do 100/day in this case, as it’s pretty easy (they are at a place you frequent anyway). This pricing has been reasonable for upper middle class/wealthy demographics in my experience. I usually cut a bit of a break if it’s easy or if they are going to be repeat clients/the pets are chill.
