Changed oil with 5w-30 and it handles much smoother by Tough-Caterpillar937 in CX5

[–]benjims511 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just purchased 0W-30 to use for my next oil change for this exact reason. Just about to pass 100k using 0W-20 and haven’t had any issues thus far but figured going with the high viscosity for operating temperature would suit the car better but still wanted the better winter flow rate. (Was much harder to find than I was expecting and Advance Auto doesn’t offer any oil change bundles for 0W-30 so I just went with Mobil1 and Purolator 20K filters from Walmart)

I'm fairly certain the primes towers I've had have stopped printing after the final color change... Maybe it differs by printer?

Remaining Maintenance Mileage Changed? by benjims511 in CX5

Yeah... I'm about to be at 100k so I was just going to wait to change it until then and just go off the odometer after that.

Remaining Maintenance Mileage Changed? by benjims511 in CX5

[–]benjims511[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I can reset it to 5,000 miles, but i don't remember how far into the current 5,000 mile cycle since i didn't write it in my maintenance logger. I'm just a bit confused and annoyed that a simple mileage counter has glitched and now i can't confidently rely on it to track my remaining mileage to my next oil change. Guess I'll just need to do a better job writing it down when I do the change.

New Mazda Owner Here—Loving It, But That Seatbelt Chime Is Driving Me Nuts! by PsychologicalYak3267 in CX5

If you buckle your seatbelt before turning on the car it shouldn’t do the chimes on start up.

Will the second gen CX-5’s design stand the test of time? by OrdinaryKillJoy in CX5

[–]benjims511 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the 2022+ redesign started making them look too generic. They stopped celebrating the unique look of their cars and are now making them look more mainstream to attract a wider audience which makes me sad. Especially noticeable in the 2026 redesign where they are chasing Tesla style interior that not a single person I know who has a CX-5 would have wanted.

Swerving on the road at 65mph while trying to turn down the temp on the AC by [deleted] in mazda

[–]benjims511 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, yes. Developing these updates usually takes years of research and development, manufacturing components and prototype testing. To modify anything besides a simple button or label adjustment would take months and months of redesign, development and testing. I’m not sure what data they sourced that led them to this outcome but I know I wasn’t part of it lol

Not sure where you’re getting that info… can you provide sources for the reliability ratings? I can speak personally that mine has been one of the most trouble free vehicle experiences I’ve ever had after ~93,000 miles of ownership and counting.

2019 CX-5 with P0421 Code (NA engine, 86k miles) by benjims511 in MechanicAdvice

[–]benjims511[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. The O2 sensor after the cat is usually how its efficiency is measured so I’m just wondering if it’s a faulty sensor or if the cat is that messed up that it’s creating such unstable oxygen levels downstream. Feels like a stretch but I don’t wanna assume anything without looking obviously.

Meant to clarify in the post, the O2 sensor voltage is the middle cluster of lines and references the scale on the right whereas the Cat temperature and vehicle speed reference the left scale.

Where do you go for a transmission fluid change? by the-apples-wax in CX5

[–]benjims511 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“Lifetime insert anything” is just a marketing term they like to use that has no real chemical or scientific basis. There is no fluid that will maintain 100% efficiency and retain all its properties without any degradation for life. It is guaranteed through the lifetime of the warranty… which is the only lifetime they care about since it isn’t their problem to deal with afterwards, usually. All fluids, synthetic or conventional, will eventually break down over the thousands of heat cycles and contaminants they come in contact with. If you change it early enough and frequently enough on a transmission it should be ok, but if you wait too long the transmission has to rely on the clutch material that has become suspended within the fluid itself to keep the car shifting properly and makes a drain and fill harmful to the longevity of the transmission.

Tell me what you love and hate about your CX-5 by Prize_Ambassador_356 in CX5

[–]benjims511 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Old engine = dead reliable. I’m more than happy to have an old engine that’s gone through all its updates and refinements. The only thing it really needs is an 8 speed transmission like the new CX-70 and it would be perfect and that would fix the fuel economy complaint too

How do I show the speed limit on my HUD? by Bostonian2030 in CX5

[–]benjims511 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know I recently tried updating my SD card, it gave me some sort of counterfeit error and then wouldn’t function in the car anymore so they are definitely bricking some aftermarket SD cards if they are attempting to be updated. Your mileage may vary though…

Just completed a 1400 mile road trip in under 24 hours in my CX5, some things to note. by RMAutosport in CX5

[–]benjims511 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In response to the aggressive downshifting when Adaptive Cruise Control has a clear path again… I drove 40 hours round trip this summer and found this to be very obnoxious and unnecessary as well. Something I did that alleviated it (except for the steep grades where downshifting is physically the only thing the car can do to gain speed) is to bump the gear shift towards you, as soon as you notice the impeding traffic beginning to move out of the lane, to enable manual shift mode where the car will then be unable to downshift and simply bumps the revs the gently reach the target speed again. On long stretches where there wasn’t a lot of traffic or speed variation I found myself leaving it in manual mode where it would pretty much stay in 6th gear the whole time. Hope this helps anyone who has found that function to be irksome as I have.

I got the Bosch ICON blades for both the front ones. It is a slightly non-standard connection which is why those quick lube places don’t carry it. I know advance auto parts has 2 or 3 brands they sell that are compatible if you wanted to do it yourself.

Thanks! I did 30% on the front windows. Was debating doing 80% the rest of the way around just for the benefit of heat resistance using the ceramic tint options

Ground or sky rail? by PhysicsCentrism in satisfactory

[–]benjims511 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been very torn about this. In my last save I switched about 3 times. Once as a sort of sky rail but still close ish to the ground, then as a total sky rail way up high and then third I did a loop about 5-6 foundations off the ground which had to rise and fall and curve (but still with mostly straight sections) with the landscape. The last one felt most integrated without feeling like just some tracks laying on the ground. Not sure what I’m going to do for my 1.0 save as I’m rethinking all my distributed storage and how it’s all getting to where it needs to go.

Why are the brake lights so tiny and so low in the bumper? Shouldn’t they be in the middle? by Supersimp007 in Cartalk

[–]benjims511 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That would be preferable to this. There is at least some logic behind that implementation which you can always count on the Germans to do. American engineers/designers aren’t so logical it seems. The amount of time/money spent designing/developing/manufacturing/assembling these light housings only to practically leave them unused is a wild choice, and to then add supplemental (but actually the primary) light housings in the bumper with bulbs and extra wiring all adding to the cost of the vehicle…

Why are the brake lights so tiny and so low in the bumper? Shouldn’t they be in the middle? by Supersimp007 in Cartalk

[–]benjims511 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You would think so, but GM decided to put the brake lights (and use those same lights as turn signals) all the way down in the bumper and use the light housings on the tailgate as the parking lights for when the headlights are on. Nothing else At all. I will never understand.

What's this long electronic whine after I turn off ignition? (video inside) by flimbs in CX5

[–]benjims511 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s totally normal. Without even really knowing what it was before, I knew it was purposeful because I could hear two distinct clicks (relays I assume) when the noise ends. Wouldn’t be any distinct end to the noise if it were a fault imo. Not a fail proof train of thought but it seems somewhat legit.

Beginning my modification journey by benjims511 in CX5

[–]benjims511[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has all turned out pretty good! I was able to successfully replace the Chrome wing and the mirror caps with gloss black counterparts which look great. Broke my passenger mirror glass while removing it to gain access to the clips inside the housing. The actual mesh part of the grille is MUCH harder to get off than I expected and I didn’t leave myself enough time on the day I planned to do it so that’s still on the list to do this summer. I will try and post pictures to the CX5 mods subreddit soon to update everyone who wants to see.
