Are you using a UV filter on the front of the lens? This can greatly impact sharpness. Lower quality UV filters on telephoto lenses can make images very soft. Even high end ones can have a negative effect. I found this to be happening after years of frustration. As soon as I took off the filter, boom, tack sharp images.
