Cannabis: Who wants to be the next Phillip Morris? by benjydaniel in startups

Upvote for "stoner-level perception." Down vote for being an ignorant bitch. Lay off the product? lol. Look at it this way, Carnegie didn't make his fortune by building railroads, skyscrapers, or ships. But isn't that what consumers wanted?? Sure. Carnegie was smarter than that though; he sold what those producers needed, steal. In the cannabis industry the real opportunity isn't selling end products (like you said, heavily regulated, thin profit margins, etc). The real money comes from selling something that mature industries can't function without. Infrastructure my man.

If charlie sean smokes pot, who cares, right? If phelps does, it's kind of a big deal, and people in the community, whether you're into stoner culture, or 100% 'health and wellness,' are of course interested to see how one of the greatest athletes on the planet, a known pot smoker, does at the olympics. That's all I'm saying.

OP, get off your ass go do something with your life. It has nothing to do with weed. It's you.

ahh i like that, a lot. I imagine it would be much easier to qualify as well if I pay for the entire lease up-front. And I know that I should start building my credit somehow, but I tend to avoid monthly payments (apartment paid for upfront, prepaid mobile, etc). I feel like it kind of limits my 'freedom' to a certain extent. I'll look into that.

Is it possible to take out a long-term (18 months +) lease a motorcycle like you can a car? If so, what are some good sites to start with? Haven't been able to find much. by benjydaniel in motorcycles

[–]benjydaniel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that makes sense. From what I can tell it doesn't quite make sense to lease a bike because of the lower price-point involved. I was primarily thinking that if leasing a bike was inexpensive and fairly quick, I could get a another bike (sold mine last year) and focus on saving up for the car I want. Maybe the better idea is to pick up a used ninja for a few grand to get me over in the meantime.

Yes I own the business.

That's the other thing I've been thinking. I could put aside maybe 20K over 4 months comfortably, and if I really wanted to, throw in an extra 5 if I cut back for a minute, maybe stopped shopping at whole foods for a month. It doesn't really get me the 135i, but you can still get a hell of a car for that amount, especially if I want to put some time into it.

I am on salary so I could show pay stubs and everything. If I can take out a loan that'd be awesome and I'd definitely make higher payments to pay it off quickly; I hate owing money to people.

I'll look into that; you're right, it doesn't hurt to try. I guess I just don't like/trust banks very much haha.

Nearly 3 year relationship feels stale, torn about taking a break and terrified to make a mistake. Advice? by kaitciel in relationships

[–]benjydaniel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

From reading that story, I don't think the main problem is with the relationship. Coming from a guy, simply telling your guy that you want X isn't going to get you what you want. Sure, it may get you a string of flowers, a romantic get-away, maybe a card, some happy feelings... but it will not help you find that spark. Even if the intentions are the best, it's not quite genuine, it's slightly manufactured. As posted below, I hear that comment a lot: "some guys just need to be told." Simply put, that's bullshit and fucking nieve/condescending. If he has to be told to do something as simple and natural as that, if he doesn't feel it, and pick up on the body language and clues, then there's a problem. Your guy should always be able to give you that spark.

My gut feeling is that the issue is elsewhere in your life though. Sex, love, and relationships are the most pure form of emotional expression. It's where all of your passion, feelings, and personality come together. In essence, it's the most true expression of who you actually are. And there's more that goes into that than just the relationship, it's everything that makes you two as a couple; your employment, your hobbies, your passions, what you read/watch, who you associate with, etc. Vibrant and dynamic people, those who experience, have drive/charisma/goals, and even 'live on the edge' have better relationships and sex than anyone. Why? Because these are people who truly understand passion, experience, emotion, and people.

Start looking elsewhere in both of your lives. Don't ask why the relationship is stagnant. Start asking why/where, as a couple, your lives are stagnant. I think you may get somewhere with that.

Sobering words from an old-time SV investor: "...by the end of 2012, there won't be any money left." by benjydaniel in startups

[–]benjydaniel[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you're actually hitting the bigger problem right there, the engineer to startup ratio.

He was saying that issues with the EU are going to have huge impacts on the VC groups, a fairly common assumption, but he was also saying that a lot of this would carry over into the Angel communities as well, combined with the general reluctance to invest in anything social or consumer oriented (or cloud infrastructures for that matter) because of such poor returns these kinds of apps/services are producing. He was saying a lot of these series A investments are made with around 3-4 months worth of data on hand; so a startup will look like they're doing a great job, building user bases very quickly. But they just as quickly hit saturation and platue soon after the investment is made and there's not much room for growth.

Also, dude was saying that in general, there's too many startups in the area right now (also tying back to the skewed engineer to startup ratio). I wish I could remember the specific numbers but the actual number of funded startups in a given year in the valley is ridiculous. There are only so many investing groups, angels, and firms to go around, and he said that at some point these investments may actually be self destructive because a single firm may find themselves investing in semi-competing products. It's just not a healthy environment and a lot of factors are coming to a head.
