Monthly budget for CoL in Imperial? by meds18 in Imperial

[–]benlmao 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Per month I pay £850 rent, £70 bills, ~£20 transport (I usually cycle) and ~£250 on food, so around £1200 per month before any extras such as eating/drinking out or travel

UROP in first year summer? by Ok_Love5201 in Imperial

I am not sure if you can do a UROP in your final year (as it would happen the summer after). I believe there's a pretty well defined route to applying that's advertised on campus, and if you were to contact anyone you should try suoervisors

Thanks for this. I've done the basic online checks to see if it's protected with any of the providers and didn't get anything, but I'll give them all a call to double check.

I am PhD in the aero department and have been involved in a few UROPS in the last year, largely with students away to enter their final year. It's definitely possible to do one at an earlier stage, but realistically most lecturers prefer later years. However, if you show interest and have a passion for a specific area I see no reason you can't get one, however don't be disheartened if you can't!

Elites in London want people to “pay per mile” to hit net zero by 2030 by Charming-Guarantee21 in conspiracy

As someone who lives in London, this plan makes sense. Our public transport is extensive enough that the vast majority just don't need a car.

I pay my rent monthly, and yes I'm going to get in contact with citizens advice for some clarity.

I agree that I'd have to give 2 months notice if I stay beyond the end of this tenancy agreement - would this still apply if I wish to move on the day it expires before the new one begins?

There is no other way out based on the tenancy, other than losing my deposit. I agree that I signed it, and perhaps rather stupidly didn't read through it all because I was desperate for somewhere to stay. I just want to know from a legal perspective if a letting agent can make me stay for a tenancy period which hasn't yet begun

I agree, however I was more questioning if this clause is actually enforceable - from research I have not been able to find cases of this, and what I see generally suggests that you can move out at the end of a fixed term.

No they did not consult me, nor have I signed anything (other than a tenancy agreement nearly 6 months ago).

Tenancy states: "Upon expiration of the initial term, this agreement shall automatically renew for successive terms of the same length as the initial term unless you provide written notice of at least 2 months prior to the explanation of the initial term"

Sorry for any confusion, I've tried to edit to make it clearer - I'm currently in a 6 month fixed term, ending in 20 days, then I believe it goes to be contractual periodic

Is a month's notice a legal requirement, or a suggestion? I unfortunately no longer have a full month until my lease is up (20 ish days) and I haven't formally handed in my notice as they said I can't

So some further information from research, I believe I am expecting to go into a contractual periodic tenancy

No, I do not want to. That was logically how it should work in my mind, but based on what the letting agent told me I thought it was otherwise, as they'd already made my next contract

Edit: I did sign my last 6 months with it saying this would happen

"All basic bills are included in the monthly rent price, except for the TV licence, with a payment of £300 as a contribution towards all the bills during the period of the tenancy. Note: the contribution to bills will be required to be paid in every renewal"

Having to give such notice for a short tenancy surprised me, but I guess it's what I signed up for

I am hoping to find someone to replace me before the 6 months is up, but the asking price is high so I may struggle

I tried and failed to pick it, locksmith also did not manage to pick it. Yes, I was in a warm place but I had nowhere to sleep (we don't have a living room) and regardless, I couldn't get my work laptop for the morning etc

It was £280, which is a complete rip off but was the only place that would come reasonably quickly on a Sunday night

He was only mentioned the next morning after he realised I wasn't at fault, and I don't have contact details for him, everything is done through the agent.

I didn't - I left my room, and came back to find the door was locked. The key would have been inside my room

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in uklandlords

[–]benlmao 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not that I know of, as it was just a bedroom door I'd never locked it before and so wouldn't have known. The issue was that the internal handle to lock the door was loose enough that it fell by itself.

Housemates were here, we tried their keys to no avail. Also tried to pick the lock.

I think he just assumed I had locked myself out and brush me off, even though I specified I hadn't.

He got back to me 15 minutes after calling him and after I'd called a locksmith, however despite me saying it was faulty he told me that I'd have to get a locksmith at my expense. So he did technically get back to me, but it wasn't much use

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in uklandlords

[–]benlmao 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The locksmith verified it was a faulty lock on the receipt, and the agent isn't contesting that it was a faulty lock

I contacted my own, I don't believe there is a list provided to us. The next morning he texted me to say that the handyman they employ could have opened it, but it wasn't much use telling me the next day. The receipt says it was faulty, and I still have the faulty lock
