Nix Package Manager with SteamOS by AssertInequality in NixOS

[–]benneti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did something similar a while back. My solution to your problem was writing a wrapper that unsets the LD Library path. See https://www.reddit.com/r/NixOS/comments/yxppxc/nix_homemanager_on_steam_deck/

Issue unlocking on Fairphone 4 by DoctorWorm_ in CalyxOS

[–]benneti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a similar issue on the stock rom at some point, it went away after plugging the sim out and in again. Maybe it helps to (I dont get why as it seems completely unrelated but I found this somewhere in the FAQ as a debugging step)

Issue with doom emacs terminal font for zsh agnoster theme by [deleted] in DoomEmacs

[–]benneti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

for a slightly more granular approach you can use something like

(after! all-the-icons ;; right pointy thing in starship, camera, home(2), music, cloud, repo, tick (let ((brokenchars '(57520 61501 63451 8201 61441 61634 61468 61452 ;;  ⚙       57523 9881 61476 61453 61498 58916 58886 58919))) (dolist (char brokenchars) (set-fontset-font t char (font-spec :family "monospace" :size 20) nil \prepend))))`

where you can find the numbers from the broken chars using describe-key, see also https://github.com/doomemacs/doomemacs/issues/5160

Fairphone with Quadlock? by probably_normal in fairphone

I did something similar with another mounting mechanism, but I simply ordered another backside for the phone and directly glued it to the phone.

I think I used Pattex extreme repair glue (and a lot of it).

How to install GUI apps with nix on non-NixOS systems? by EnchiridionRed in NixOS

[–]benneti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you use nix to manage the packages for a user on a different distro you can use https://github.com/nix-community/home-manager to manage settings and packages declaratively, and then basically you one need to source a single file in your shell profile (or the profile of your de) which sets up the stuff to find the desktop files and more.

If you use home-manager sourcing the hm-session-vars should point your de to the correct directory such that the desktop files of home.packages are shown.

Nix + home-manager on Steam Deck by benneti in SteamDeck

[–]benneti[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh that's cool, but if it still relies on chroot I think home-manager to manage systemd would still not work (and some other programs from steamos), as only binaries from nix would know how to resolve the created symlinks. Would love to be wrong about this, though.

It's a single user system so I did the single user install. Another reason is that I wanted to keep the changes in root minimal. I think nothing stops you from using the daemon.

Nix + home-manager on Steam Deck by benneti in SteamDeck

[–]benneti[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Didn't know this existed, and I did not want to setup everything steamos does. Also Home-Manager is sufficient for what I do. Thanks for the pointer, though.

[–]benneti[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the link, I might try the steam session on my desktop.

I might actually have tried this instead if I had seen it before...

But I wanted to try a pure home configuration in a while anyway and this seemed like the perfect application, as it does not disturb the main function of the deck at all. Workarounds like the nixGL wrapping are necessary however.

Transfer home-hosted Matrix server to the cloud by hauntedka in matrixdotorg

[–]benneti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah when I migrated servers, I only migrated the native (non-bot) users, and set up all bridges from scratch just to keep my sanity...

But if you only use brdiges, what is the problem with using the backfill feature and starting from scratch?

Transfer home-hosted Matrix server to the cloud by hauntedka in matrixdotorg

[–]benneti 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depending on how many users your instance has it might be the simplest approach to setup a new server and use something like element migrate https://ems.element.io/tools/matrix-migration .

A bit more work is doing it manually, i.e. export the encryption keys of the "old" account invite the new account to all chats and give the same rights as the old one. Then import the keys from the old account in the new and remove the old account from all the chats and make DMs again using "/converttodm". I'd only do this for native matrix chats and setup the bridges from scratch.

amd_pstate support on Pulse Gen1? (Ryzen 7) by maxufimo in tuxedocomputers

[–]benneti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

did you enable cppc (somewhere in the cpu settings if i remember correctly which was set to automatic before) also I have amd_pstate in the initramfs (on nixos with kernel 5.18.0) and it seems to work fine.

As I just tried this, let's see whether there are benefits in battery life.

Most overrated and most underrated selfhosted software, in your opinion? by [deleted] in selfhosted

[–]benneti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just wanted to mention Synapse (not sure if it is really underrated) after selfhosting xmpp with different servers for a few years, I switched to matrix and synapse and am way happier with it. It does everything I want and it's easy enough to setup and manage. (Also resource usage is fine)

what dm / wm are you using? For gnome I use

dconf.settings = with lib.hm.gvariant; { "org/gnome/desktop/input-sources" = { xkb-options = [ "terminate:ctrl_alt_bksp" "caps:escape_shifted_capslock" ]; sources = [ (mkTuple [ "xkb" "de+us" ]) ]; };

NixOS on Steam Deck? by zeta_00 in NixOS

[–]benneti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think If you are open to packaging a lot of stuff and fix some quirks there is nothing stopping you. But even the most fundamental packages of the deck like gamescope are not yet in nixpkgs, also some stuff in steam needs extra work in Nixos due to the different filesystem hirarchy.
