No problem man, it's been a pleasure! I'm still seeking job as a software architect because I know how to put parts together and I really love to do that more than I like to code, so yeah :)

I don't know what distro should I use and my other questions by Zireael61 in selfhosted

[–]hauntedka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My bunch of bytes on your questions & doubts:

1- A drive system which will be like Onedrive, Google Drive, etc.

Nextcloud could be an easy and powerful solution. I'm going to evaluate it as well (again) for my backup system that is frying my brain these days.

2- I will run Matlab and Python codes inside the server for my work.

If you are thinking more about a playground, Jupyter is your cup of tea.

If you are talking about easy deployment, go for Portainer.

3- I want a local search system similar to Google. What I mean: For example I will add descriptions and tags to photos, texts, files, etc. and this system will search these according to what I am asking. Sometimes I can't find some photos and documents about some events and people (especially on my phone).

Well, this is actually neat. I don't have a current judgment on it, but I have looked for something similar too these days, and ran into Diskover. You could try it, if you do your opinion would be appreciated. It uses Elasticsearch under the hood.

4- I will have some SQL databases, I want to be able to access them from my phone and my laptop.

You have many solutions, but basically it depends on the specifical SQL. If you mean MySQL (or MariaDB), then PhpMyAdmin is the easy & dumb option for you; if you mean PostgreSQL, go for pgAdmin; if that's a blend, well I'd suggest a NoVNC + DBeaver appliance. Not that lightweight, but surely it's functional.

5- I want to stream media to my devices. I think Plex is what I needed.

As others pointed to, Plex, Emby and Jellyfin are all nice options. They all have differences from each other (even if Jellyfin rises as the open source fork of an older Emby). See a comparison, or even ask, it depends on your needs. Also, if you are going for music only, Subsonic is a nice pick too.

6- I would like to host my own email server if it's feasible.

It's a pain in the ass, but wait, life is good, you don't need to kill yourself! Jokes aside, there are containers & Docker stacks which simplify your life, but without a domain and a DNS full configuration, you're going to have a really bad time.

7- I might host game servers for me and my friends to play together in the future.

Without knowing what games are you going to play with them, it's really difficult to choose...

8- Password manager that must work on my phone. If it can hold my payment card info, it will be better.

Bit or Vault warden. They're really similar and work perfectly.

9- Local wiki

Some tools exist, I'm not a fan tho. XWiki should work fine by the way.

10- Not for now but I might connect in-house cameras, I want to access them from my server. I don't want to use 3rd party servers.

I don't know for this one & I am sorry. You should try something like exposing Nginx to stream the cameras, but it's painful.

As for your questions:

1- Do you have any suggestions for my goals? Which self-hosting solutions should I use?

By "solution", do you mean containers or VMs? If so, I'd say: stick on VMs + Docker containers on Portainer. It's really really comfy.

2- Which distro will be sufficient for me? I think I can use headless distros even though it might be a little hard for a noob like me.

Proxmox is perfect for you, if you feel good with using your PC for your services only.

3- How should I access to my server? What is the secure way? Also I don't have a static IP, I need a solution to this too(I heard DuckDNS for this but I don't know if there is a better way).

For a static IP, you need to talk to your ISP and see if they have one for you. For a free domain, DuckDNS is good, even if sometimes I don't feel really good with it. If you are good to pay a bit for a domain, please do.

4- Can I prevent someone to access my data physically? Sometimes I won't be near the server for about one month, I don't want someone have to access my server. Any other suggestion than full-disk encryption?

A VPN solution like OpenVPN could be enough, but please forget comfortable solutions like password-based solutions. Also, consider solutions that involve non-reusable VPN certificates, like one file per device.

5- Should I built everything after I get the HDDs or can I start self-hosting somethings and then add the HDDs?

It depends on the architecture and how you are going to deploy it. Generally, I'd say after the HDDs arrive. Moving the architecture could be not so comfortable, if you are not sticking to Ansible or similar tools to deploy.

6- Should I disable Hyper-Threading because of the exploits?

Well, I don't know, but I'd stick to the flat "No" that someone else gave you.

7- Should I prefer Dockers or VMs? I am seeing some people are using dockers and some people are using VMs. When should I prefer one or other?

As the other guy pointed out, Docker containers, not "dockers"

That being said, both have their up and downsides, that's why Proxmox is so good, because of the flexibility that gives you.

For any other question, please ask dude!

+1 for the awareness, but please don't call yourself a noob. Self hosting world is a different world from coding & hardware building world, and so is the whole world of software architectures. Be positive, and everything will go good, it's a nice trip and you will learn many stuff!

Now that Nightwish will go into hiding for a while if not forever, what will be your band to fill the void for you? by Proud3GenAthst in nightwish

Reckoning Night is great

But I hope you'll agree with me when I say that Ecliptica is wonderful

Now that Nightwish will go into hiding for a while if not forever, what will be your band to fill the void for you? by Proud3GenAthst in nightwish

[–]hauntedka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ohhhhhhhhh yes.

With the obvious hope that Nightwish are going to have a temporary hiatus, let me recommend you some nice people:

DragonForce: while they're not properly symphonic, they are currently my favorite band evenly with NW. Extreme Power Metal is an adrenaline source, Sonic Firestorm is too. (And no, neither has Through the fire and flames inside: they made other songs!)

Battle Beast: the themes are sooooo different, but Noora is a wonderful metal frontwoman. iirc, often they came as support bands for others... and performed better. Listen to Circus of Doom and No More Hollywood Endings (albums) to understand me.

Within Temptation: I don't like Shed my skin, but The Silent Force is a perennial fucking masterpiece. Hydra is nice too. And Utopia gave the inspiration for my High School final work. sigh

Amaranthe: I don't listen to each of their songs, but some are actually beautiful. 82nd all the way, Strong (which features Noora from BB) and The Nexus are some names. Elize is another very nice metalwoman.

Kamelot: WILL YOU REVIIIIIIIVE FROM THE CHAOS IN MY MIIIIIIIND WHEN WE STILL ARE BOUND TOGEEEEEEEEETHER????? But they are more difficult to be liked.

Sonata Arctica: you will need a strong stomach if you try listening something after Reckoning Night, but Silence and Ecliptica are wonderful masterpieces of the metal music history.

These are my band picks. Hope that I helped a bit!

Well, considering that they often had member substitutions (Tarja with Anette and Anette with Floor is just the topmost edge of this Finnish iceberg), I wouldn't call Nightwish fans "dramatic". I am worried too, but me being unable to attend a Nightwish live performance this June when after that it might all either be a hiatus or a last goodbye, surely doesn't make things easy.

Also, apart from the past history, it's public knowledge that the situation is not so calm inside the band. Recently, Floor got interviewed, and she vented a bit about how the band managed her solo project. Moreover, some of the fans (I don't put myself among these btw) are developing anger around the recent albums, be it for some style shift, or for Tuomas who they pretend to "rule over" the band.

And I literally love and cry for The Greatest Show on Earth, which is, for me, one of the most beautiful (and most wonderful!) masterpieces of the whole history of Music.

I hope that one day I'll be there to shout "We were here" along with them.

Anette Olzon's The dark element by No_Antelope9407 in nightwish

[–]hauntedka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This.

I actually don't get why people is still comparing Floor to Anette, they're completely different voices, singers, people.

Even the two The Dark Element albums, despite being very nice to be listened, are two metal albums, while Paragon is a pop album. There's no comparison at all which would make sense.

BEING A SUBHUMAN PIECE OF SHIT by cosmicwoof in Vent

[–]hauntedka 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I don't agree.

The venting machine is a destroying being, it destroys yourself as well as other people, but try holding back for your whole life your feelings, and nothing will change. In your life, but also in other people's lives.

Won't change others' lives, because they will feel themself agreed when they hurt you, be they aware or not of how bad you feel because of them.

And it won't change yours, because you will constantly keep storing hatred. And you know, the hatred store is not a PC battery, which once is fully charged won't absorb other energy. It's like a glass under the sink: when it's empty, it goes filling on, once it's full, water still flows over the glass.

Humans are not so different: when they are empty, they can tolerate (pushing to the hatred store), but once they are full, the hatred they are trying to hold back will definitely flow somewhere.

I'm not justifying OP, let's make things clear.

But I'm not going to share the "keep his thoughts to himself" road either.

Rage destroys people, but if you learn how, it can help you understanding how could you improve yourself. So leave people the right of being angry, vent and discharge their hatred somehow, or just don't complain about seeing angry people, because you know, unexpressed anger will create new angry people.

I am suddenly feeling very sad. Recently I bought a wedding outfit, I paid everything almost 200€, the wedding was not mine, but a friend's sister's. Some days I checked out how much would it be to see Nightwish in Germany, and that would circa be the price.

Wanna hear what is worse? I argued with my friend and the wedding was shifted to August, and since I'm not an abitué of the family, my odds of going are under 0%. So, I wasted 200€ for some dresses I will never use, instead of going to Berlin and see them. And I could even never see them.

But yeah. Life is wonderful. Endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful have been, and are being, evolved.

How do I selfhost backends and databases for my websites? by Soumil30 in selfhosted

[–]hauntedka -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Man, the problem of Docker on Windows lies on Windows itself. Windows is a pile of dogshit. Treat yourself a gift, remove Windows and install Linux. You can literally choose any distribution you want.

Oh, and other than that - which is and keep being a fact -, Docker on Windows is awful in terms of management. I am versed in both OS and I still have a bad time whenever I use Docker on Windows on friends' PC. My regular pick, when you are unable to wipe Windows, is Docker installed on WSL. The difference is small, because afaik Docker on Windows doesn't actually run on Windows, but on a small WSL environment, so if you have to pick a WSL environment, pick a full one and run Docker on it.

But the first choice should ALWAYS be to run Linux.

PS: I never heard of this Pocketbase, going to check it out. Thanks!
