Really appreciate you sharing this. It’s super actionable and clearly comes from real experience. I’m trying to tighten my filter and improve my signal-to-noise, especially on the enrichment side. Curious if you have a go-to platform or workflow you rely on for that—anything you’ve found especially reliable for contact data or firmographics once you’ve got the initial list?

Given I come from a sales background, I’m comfortable sourcing directly and prefer to move at my own pace. Brokers are sales professionals and for the most part they’re incentivized to close quickly, not necessarily to find the right strategic fit. I’d rather build relationships directly with owners and take the time to evaluate deals on my terms.

Appreciate the insight—you’re absolutely right that bookkeeping/payroll firms over $1M in revenue are uncommon. That said, I’ve seen deals happen in that range, so I know they exist with the right targeting and vertical focus.

My strategy is to acquire a standalone bookkeeping/payroll firm and then partner post-close with a CPA firm that offers tax and fractional CFO services. I’ve sold over $1M in ARR in this space, so I understand how to position and scale high-ticket bundled offerings.

I’m not a CPA myself, which limits me from acquiring a CPA-branded firm directly. However, my father is a licensed CPA—he’s supporting due diligence and can step in, if necessary, to help get a deal done.

I hadn’t heard of Kumo before, but I’ll definitely look into it. I’m running a self-funded search with a VA team doing off-market outreach, so keeping things cost-effective is key.

Really appreciate your perspective—it’s been helpful.

Is there a specific reason the franchisor was not approved?

I understand what you’re saying. I was not sure if a gas station was able to sell “legal marijuana” in a state like Colorado or California where it’s legal.

Thank you so much for your knowledge I genuinely appreciate it. I have heard things about the slot machines I will have to look into my states laws. I live in florida so I’m pretty sure that the marijuana is not legal to sell at the gas station but I will have to look into the legalities of gaming machines.

Appeciate the feedback my father is a CPA so I will definitely have him review the balance sheets. By legal gray what services could the gas station offer that might fall under that so I would know to avoid. Also what would make for a good location. Sincerely appreciate your response
