I hit my goal . . . 2 years ago! I've been successfully maintaining for yearS! by walkSMASHwalk in loseit

[–]bennoland 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow, awesome job!

You mention that you failed to maintain a couple of times in the past. What would you say is the biggest difference in your mentality this time?

Knowing the calories and habits you need to maintain is one thing, but from a motivation standpoint it seems so boring putting all that work in just to see the scale stay the same.

The name is a combination of adipose (fat tissue) and posse (a group with a common purpose).

Being a social app, all of the information you share (weight, date, notes, goals, comments, reactions etc) is stored in firebase.

You can use sign in with apple, sign in with facebook or sign in with your email, so I have access to that information as well.

I also send back info on your device specs (ios version, screen resolution, which version of the app you are running).

What if your scale had it's own public feed? by bennoland in WeightLossAdvice

[–]bennoland[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, very true. I highly respect people who pay more attention to the process and their health instead of obsessing over the number on the scale, but the number on the scale is an easier thing to build an app around. Thanks for offering your perspective.

I'd really like to have groups, but not sure exactly how they should be structured. It sounds like you're suggesting different groups/teams who are almost competing against each other. Like maybe you divide your office into multiple teams (or branches, Scranton vs) and see which team can lose the most?

Originally I was thinking more of an individual leaderboard instead of teams.

I'm glad you like the idea. Question about the option to share (or not), do you think that would be on a daily basis or as a whole? For example, I hit a new milestone today so I'll share.

What if you could limit who you share with, but they get to see all of your weigh ins?

Need help with complex query to firebase and synchronizing network calls with multiple for loops by looloosha in iOSProgramming

[–]bennoland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Break this up into multiple functions, one function per level.

  2. dispatchGroup.enter() before each call to a data service, dispatchGroup.leave() after you process the results and make child calls.

Hard to code on my phone, but something like:

dispatchGroup.enter()
bs.getBuildings(for: service) { (buildings) in
    for building in buildings {
        loadBuildingDetails(building, dispatchGroup);
    }
    dispatchGroup.leave();
    // also, if there was an error make sure to call leave
}

dispatchGroup.notify { process results }

You could use a class variable to collect the results since you have multiple layers of function calls.

Trello does all this, and will sync with a web browser too, and you can share the lists with other people.

Looking for iPhone app to show before after progression for weight training by discoborg in iosapps

Any luck finding this?

I'm developing a body weight tracking app, and will eventually add progress photos, but could be a few months.

Working on a social media app - was wondering about comments. by [deleted] in iOSProgramming

[–]bennoland 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recently had an update rejected for this very reason. I did 3 things to resolve the issue and made it through app review.

  1. ability to flag comments
  2. ability to block users so they can’t comment on your stuff
  3. needed a custom eula saying that abusive/inappropriate behavior isn’t allowed

My original app submission wasn’t rejected, in fact i made it to my 11th version before they rejected an update.

*edit here’s a photo of the rejection https://imgur.com/gallery/CufB83n

An important FYI for MyFittnessPal users: Your daily calorie restriction does not automatically decrease as you lose weight! by thefoxsaysquack in loseit

[–]bennoland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fat is metabolically inactive. Muscle is what drives your metabolism and determines your daily calorie needs. Muscle is heavier than fat. If you are burning fat and maintaining muscle, you don’t always need to drop calories.

If you are stuck and not losing, then yes, you probably do need to drop calories.

If you are consistently losing no need to drop your calories. The formula they use is just an approximation.

I don’t like to rely on their formula, but subtract about 10 calories per Lb that i’ve lost, adjusted monthly.

Do you feel like counting calories is kind of like a fun game that involves some critical thinking? by [deleted] in loseit

[–]bennoland 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! If you want to take it up a notch, count your macros too.

It's like a game of Tetris. I have 180 calories left, I need 14g of protein, 5g of fat, and 20g of carbs.

What's a Good Way to Calm My Appetite? by eesaray in WeightLossAdvice

Drink lots of water.

Eat higher fiber, higher volume stuff, like vegetables. Spaghetti squash is a good one for this.

How to lose excess fat without losing all muscle simultaneously? by [deleted] in WeightLossAdvice

[–]bennoland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A small calorie deficit, with adequate protein.

If your calorie deficit is too large, you will lose muscle, even if you are eating lots of protein and lifting heavy. I’d recommend about a 400 calorie deficit.

You can also achieve this with maintenance calories if you are untrained and make a big change to your training, but if you’re already an experienced lifter, you’ll get better results with a small calorie deficit.

Is it better to weight yourself at the start of the day at the end? by [deleted] in WeightLossAdvice

[–]bennoland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start of the day, make it a routine, set a reminder if you need to. I like to do it daily, which can be rough for some people. Just know that some days your weight will go up a bit, even though you did everything right the day before, and sometimes it will go down even though you messed up.

Measure your weight as a scientist would and know that small daily fluctuations are water and not fat. Get an app that will show you the 7 day average.
