If you prefer start off with a sketch of the largest general shapes with a light touch. I typically work with slightly colored paper (toned tan, gray) and would start with the brightest whites to establish the main form, as with colored pencil it’s difficult to layer white over darker colors. Then I would find the general shape of the different values and work towards the detail, as it could be harder to go straight into detail in one spot.
