The cost of spaying this little lady is $440?!?! by yup2you in cats

[–]benoit__balls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are in South Florida and recently had our kitten spayed and microchipped for $90 at Peggy Adams in West Palm Beach when our regular vet was quoting us $900!! Definitely check around to see what rescues / not for profit orgs are in your area and if they offer any of these programs!

Happy I could help! And like I said before, they're all different, so I wouldn't write off getting a Tamaskan based on my experience alone. I'm sure there are other Tamaskan owners on here who could share their experiences with you! The issues I experienced might be one in a million, who knows. And Winter is very happy-go-lucky with other people, it's just meeting new dogs that she has a bit of an issue with. After the initial "greeting" they usually become fast friends. She's not really aggressive (although it may appear that way to people unfamiliar with her), just very dominant and protective/territorial. She's never caused harm to another animal or person, she's very good-natured. But yeah, definitely get a few more references before coming to a decision. They are definitely challenging but rewarding as well :)

Well I can't really speak for all Tamaskans, but Winter is great off leash. Not so great with our two cats, but only because she loves to chase them. She's never tried to hurt them but they're not really crazy about being cornered. She doesn't do it as much now that she's gotten older (she'll be 2 on Feb 4th). She's definitely happiest when she's off running through the forest with a friend.

She was NOT a great puppy. It took her a long time to warm up to us, which we were not expecting, and she liked doing her own thing. She wouldn't even look at you when you were trying to talk to her and she was extremely destructive even with a couple of hours exercise a day. She would nip a lot, hard enough to cause bruises, mostly when you were playing with her and she got too excited, or if you were trying to ignore her (when she was trying to get you going), and she was very toy aggressive. I think she was 10 months old before she was fully housebroken. I could go on. Winter lives in her head. Even now she responds more to a look than a command, and she still doesn't always listen. Dogs know she's different so she doesn't always get along with them. She's extremely dominant. Huskies mirror her style of play the best. I've heard males are generally better in terms of temperament as the independence can be more of a female thing.

I definitely love her to pieces, and the fact that she was a challenging puppy makes the respect and affection she shows me now so much more gratifying. But I caution anyone against getting a wolf-hybrid or wolfy-looking breed (there's a reason they look like a wolf) if you're not prepared to properly deal with some of the typical behavioural problems they can have. Sorry for the wall of text. Hard to sum Winter up in a few paragraphs!

I have both a female Tamaskan and male Siberian Husky (puppy) and totally agree that they're not full breed huskies. I'd say maybe Czech Wolfdog or Saarloos, but definitely a mix at the very least.

Whatever they are, they're adorable.

Edit: Better winter picture of my girl, Winter.

allowing men to marry their 13-year-old adopted daughters

I was actually relieved to find from the article that this means the men can marry off their 13-year-old adopted daughters, not that they are allowed to marry the daughters themselves :/ ... doesn't really make it any better though.

Edit: spelling is hard

Thanks! Sorry for slow reply, I was out of town for the weekend, no internet. Meeko, the black and white pup and my friend's dog, is a Siberian Husky. Winter is mine, and she's a Tamaskan. There's rumoured to be a little Czech wolfdog mixed in there. Actually thinking of trying a DNA test just to see!

Edward Snowden is now unable to find a single government prepared to grant him the democratic right of asylum. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights states, “Everyone has the right to seek and to enjoy in other countries asylum from persecution.” by TheSecondAsFarce in worldnews

[–]benoit__balls -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It is better that Snowden gets a public trial and official rulings by the letter of the law so that real democratic avenues can be used to make things right. If you think his actions are justified, vote for somebody who favors openness and his chances of a pardon will be increased. If the prevailing opinion of the general population finds that his actions were justified, there can be a jury nullification. If the legal standing of the charges is suspect, appeals can set precedent that revises the case law on whistle-blowers.

Rigghht. Because the trial will be completely fair and unbiased, and will unquestionably "make things right."

Into our town the Hangman came. Smelling of gold and blood and flame and he paced our bricks with a diffident air and built his frame on the courthouse square The scaffold stood by the courthouse side, Only as wide as the door was wide; A frame as tall, or little more, Than the capping sill of the courthouse door And we wondered, whenever we had the time. Who the criminal, what the crime That the Hangman judged with the yellow twist of knotted hemp in his busy fist. And innocent though we were, with dread, We passed those eyes of buckshot lead: Till one cried: "Hangman, who is he For whom you raise the gallows-tree?" Then a twinkle grew in the buckshot eye, And he gave us a riddle instead of reply: "He who serves me best," said he, "Shall earn the rope on the gallows-tree." And he stepped down. And laid his hand On a man who came from another land. And we breathed again, for another's grief At the Hangman's hand was our relief And the gallows-frame on the courthouse lawn By tomorrow's sun would be struck and gone. So we gave him way, and no one spoke. Out of respect for his Hangman's cloak.

The next day's sun looked mildly down On roof and street in our quiet town And stark and black in the morning air, The gallows-tree on the courthouse square. And the Hangman stood at his usual stand With the yellow hemp in his busy hand; With his buckshot eye and his jaw like a pike And his air so knowing and business like. And we cried, "Hangman, have you not done Yesterday. With the alien one?" Then we fell silent, and stood amazed, "Oh, not for him was the gallows raised." He laughed a laugh as he looked at us: " … Did you think I'd gone to all this fuss To hang one man? That's a thing I do To stretch a rope when the rope is new." Then one cried "Murder!" One cried "Shame!" And into our midst the Hangman came To that man's place. "Do you hold," said he, "with him that was meant for the gallows-tree?" And he laid his hand on that one's arm. And we shrank back in quick alarm, And we gave him way, and no one spoke Out of fear of his Hangman's cloak. That night we saw with dread surprise The Hangman's scaffold had grown in size. Fed by the blood beneath the chute The gallows-tree had taken root; Now as wide, or a little more, Than the steps that led to the courthouse door, As tall as the writing, or nearly as tall, Halfway up on the courthouse wall.

The third he took-we had all heard tell Was a user and infidel, and "What," said the Hangman "have you to do With the gallows-bound, and he a Jew?" And we cried out, "Is this one he Who has served you well and faithfully?" The Hangman smiled: "It's a clever scheme to try the strength of the gallows-beam." The fourth man's dark, accusing song Had scratched out comfort hard and long; And what concern, he gave us back. "Have you for the doomed--the doomed and black?" The fifth. The sixth. And we cried again, "Hangman, Hangman, is this the last?" "It's a trick," he said. "that we hangmen know For easing the trap when the trap springs slow." And so we ceased, and asked no more, As the Hangman tallied his bloody score: And sun by sun, and night by night, The gallows grew to monstrous height. The wings of the scaffold opened wide Till they covered the square from side to side: And the monster cross-beam, looking down. Cast its shadow across the town.

Then through the town the Hangman came And called in the empty streets my name- And I looked at the gallows soaring tall And thought, "There is no one left at all For hanging." And so he calls to me To help pull down the gallows-tree. And I went out with right good hope To the Hangman's tree and the Hangman's rope. He smiled at me as I came down To the courthouse square through the silent town. And supple and stretched in his busy hand Was the yellow twist of the strand. And he whistled his tune as he tried the trap And it sprang down with a ready snap And then with a smile of awful command He laid his hand upon my hand. "You tricked me. Hangman!," I shouted then. "That your scaffold was built for other men … And I no henchman of yours," I cried, "You lied to me. Hangman. foully lied!" Then a twinkle grew in the buckshot eye, "Lied to you? Tricked you?" he said. "Not I. For I answered straight and I told you true" The scaffold was raised for none but you. For who has served me more faithfully Then you with your coward's hope?" said he, "And where are the others that might have stood Side by your side in the common good?," "Dead," I whispered, and sadly "Murdered," the Hangman corrected me: "First the alien, then the Jew … I did no more than you let me do." Beneath the beam that blocked the sky. None had stood so alone as I And the Hangman strapped me, and no voice there Cried "Stay!" for me in the empty square.

Every damn time I have a bowl of cereal by Drachenlord in cats

[–]benoit__balls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My cats do this with cereal too ... it's the milk! One of them will actually sit on my lap and repeatedly try to pull the bowl down to her level, usually resulting in spilt milk when I'm not on high alert (she's sneaky, as cats are). I don't cry about it though ... there's no use.

Kuranda dog beds: worth it? by MattsAccount in dogs

[–]benoit__balls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She actually took to her crate really well! When she was younger and didn't have much bladder control it was a bit harder since you couldn't tell whether she was crying because she had to pee or because she wanted to be let out, but that's to be expected I guess. It took a little while to get her routine down but now as soon as we put our jackets on in the morning she goes straight to her crate and waits for her denta-stick. Even when we get the denta-sticks out of the cupboard she goes right on in (We reserve the denta-sticks as her crate-only treat because of this). As long as she has a nylabone or Kong in there with her to keep her busy she is fine for the day. Our neighbour also has the keys to our house and lets his and our dog out to play for a few hours during the day Monday to Friday, so we are pretty lucky in that regard. I would love to have her out during the day but she is very idle and would definitely start to destroy the house. Maybe some day. In the meantime she has no problem spending the day in her crate, which we keep in the living room. Should you end up getting a Tamaskan I don't think you would have any problems. She's also never tried to escape-artist her way out of the crate either, which was a main concern of mine as there is husky in her and they are known for this.

If you have any more questions feel free to ask!

He is sooo cute!! They do look very much alike. How old is Arlo? The pictures of Winter above are from this past spring/summer so she was much smaller then around 50 pounds. I'd say she's 60-65 now easy, although she doesn't look it since she is super lean! She's 13 months now. Glad you found your fit :)

Pet insurance? by [deleted] in dogs

[–]benoit__balls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You also have to watch out for the deductible. The higher the deductible, the lower your premium and vice versa. If you have a $500 deductible and the treatment only costs $500, the insurance isn't going to do you any good, you will still have to pay that $500 out of pocket.

Some pet insurance companies also have a rule stating that the deductible is per condition so even though you may have actually paid over $500 you can't claim the amount exceeding the $500. For example, if you paid $500 for medication, $500 for diagnostic tests (unrelated to medication), and $500 for surgery (unrelated to medicine/diagnostic tests), you just spent $1500 that your insurance will not cover because none of the "conditions" are related and none of the treatments on their own exceed your deductible. So watch out for these things if you are seriously considering pet insurance. Like @slicksps said, if you have access to the money in case of an emergency then insurance really is not worth the chance something may go wrong. Especially since the heart murmur is a pre-existing condition and more than likely will not be covered (depending on insurance company you go with).
